I got the cylinders all washed up and cleaned with ATF. I will file fit the rings next to get it ready for install. The heads should be done by the 18th so have a few days to get everything in order.
When I was talking to Don (head builder) about the valve sticking he asked if checked the clearance for the roller rockers to rocker cover. I said no why do I need to? He said sometimes but its always good to check. Well today I started looking at the rockers and damn if there isn't a witness mark where the rear intake rocker was hitting the rocker cover. No wonder there was a problem.

I took the piston rings out to check the gaps. One of the 2nd rings had a .0275 gap right out of the box. The specs are .016-.026 so already over .0015
I put that ring in both cylinders just to make sure it was the ring and not the bore of the cylinder. The other 2nd ring was much tighter in both cylinders but had the same measurement so I will be able to file fit that one.
So I placed an order for a new set of rings. I should be able to find one that will work.

The cams came in yesterday and also the ring compressor I purchased. So I got started and installed the new cam shaft. Since it was my second time doing this job it was much easier. I also didn't change the cam bearings. I have only had the 583 S&S cam in for maybe 500 miles if that. Everything looked good coming apart so I could tell there were no problems from the last install. Took a few pics this time just so I can verify everything lining up.
The cams are Cycle-Rama CR595i . Should work nice with the 106 @ 11:1 compression 50mm throttle body and 4.9 injectors. I will continue the build when the heads are finished. I will take the cylinders and pistons with me so we can mock up for piston to valve clearance.
What it looked like when I took the cover off to remove the 583 cams. Then the empty cam chest, cam box, cam specs, installed.

What it looked like

Empty cam chest

583 cams coming out

All clean

did this to both sides on both covers.

S&S 106 cylinders and pistons
Sat down and disassembled both rocker assemblies and cleaned them. Took a wire wheel to all the bolts and cleaned all the threaded holes. I clearance the rocker covers but I will recheck during assembly. It was very therapeutic getting everything spot less for reassembly.

I’ve been enjoying following along. I’m undecided where to go enginewise with my fatty.

Question on your Öhlins rears shocks, what length are they?

They are set at 12" and that is as short as they go. I can make them longer but I am not sure how much because I have not checked it. I also have a 1" lowering block installed.
The shocks handle very well. I am able to have them that low with correct sag adjustment , still get full range of movement out of the shock without bottoming out. Again I am a solo rider that weighs just under 200lbs If you ride two up or carry luggage it might be a problem.

My new set of rings came in today. I think the set that came in my 106 kit were either bad or used as in fitted wrong then returned? Cylinders measure perfect so not sure what happened. Anyway the new set of rings all measure the same out of the box in both of the cylinders. The second rings were .011 and the top rings were .008 right out of the box which gives me plenty to file to fit perfect.
