Fluid changes and Regular Maintenance Questions

Hey guys,
So I'm finally getting myself into working on my Harley little by little. Starting to get familiar with the bike, but have some random questions.

I got a 2000 Dyna FXDX

1. How often should I changed the primary fluid?
2. How often should I change the transmission fluid?
3. How often should I change the engine oil? I live in Northern California and it's usually warm all summer, but has its cold days in the fall/winter. 20W50 good?
What are some other PM's that you would recommend?

Sorry for so many questions, but i definitely appreciate the feedback.

Thanks guys,
Rob

You should really get an owner's manual and follow their intervals. Probably not much different than the later models, but it's something you should read anyway. You can find one here:

What is a PM?

Just ordered the service manual. I'm waiting for it to come in. PM is a preventative maintenance. So I guess what I'd be asking, is there anything out of the ordinary you check on the bike? something you might of heard people say before?

Cam chain tensioners, front motor mount, shocks front and rear, wheel bearings....

+1 on the owners manual the bible manual, and some graph paper to keep in the manual to keep dates and logs, measurements. Also, be sure to do maintenance by mileage and by date. Meaning if you have road in six months and have put on 5000 miles. Change your oils anyway. Log it. It’ll bring you more if you sell the bike God Forbid, but also will keep you getting from point A to point B. Happy shop rags!

As has ben said get an owners manual.

I personally keep my engine oil fresher than the recommended 8000km
I do basically:
5000km Engine Oil, Oil Filter Plugs, Wash K&N (Air) Filter
10,000km Engine Oil, Oil Filter, Wash K&N (Air) Filter, Tranny Oil, Primary Oil.
15,000km repeat.

I learnt from my first Dyna that a poor tune and using Harley oil sticking to the "recommended" 8000km intervals wasn't cutting it.

FYI Motul Twin Syn in the engine. Spectro Gear oil in the Tranny, Spectro Primary oil in the primary.
