Oil low/rough at 2600mi, 1000 miles service completed
Hey folks, so I checked my oil in my 16 FXDF and it was at the ADD/LOW line at cold. It's pretty dark, not burnt and not a bad smell, but looks rough. It's had the 1000 mile service, and isn't due again until 5000k IIRC.
I bought the following oil to top up with till then, but should I do another oil change, FULL SYN, before then. I've put 1600mi on my bike since last Sept, and have grown damn comfy with her and ride her hard, but this caught me by surprise a bit.

Yes and it was ok then. I added about a half quart today, cold, up to the midway mark as per the manual. At the 1000 mile service Full Syn HD 20W-50 was used per the service record paperwork I have. I"ll have to check again after my next ride and see where I'm at. I want to get the oil changed now and start from scratch again prior to the 5000mi service. Doesn't seem to be right using that much oil with a new bike, or maybe it's me?

Why are you not changing your own oil.?..then you will know for sure what’s in there and how much was put in. Also the last thing you want is to have it overfilled.....
i would say at this point to do another complete oil change and go from there....and don’t just go by mileage either....time can effect the oil as well....
cheap insurance.....

Well I just now got a garage space again, but don't have the stuff to do it anymore. What all do I NEED to do it? Floorjack, pan, and filter wrench I'm guessing? All good points you made and the best plan I think. It'll have to wait another month though since I'm about to start a new job and won't get a full paycheck again until the end of August. I'll add it to the list, tell me what I'm missing though please.
Edited: no jack/lift needed, so pan and filter/filter wrench will be had soon and this is gonna get turned around ASAP.

If you have the owners manual good information there. Check youtube sites for changing oil for bikes like yours.
A plastic basin to capture the old oil as it drains and for filter removal
A rubber strap wrench to help remove the oil filter
Cheap set of allen wrenches
cheap set of sockets and 3/8" drive ratchet
set of combination wrenches
This should get you through an oil change.
