Stock doesn't fit my wheels but I have disassembled several old, abused stock wheels and the rim strips all looked good. Unknown age and miles, but some we're pretty stiff so I'm guessing pretty old.

Rim strips should always be replaced if tire has been removed from the rim. They cost pennies, put a new one on.

I've seen rim strips literally "glued" to the rim in the past. Some rusty, some not.

I've also seen duct tape used in place of a rim strip in the past. (Especially of dirtbikes.)
