So the FXDBP is in the shop after dumping it. Insurance is covering it, but damn! The gas tank is $1600? Granted it's Hard Candy Custom Big Red Flake, but really? The front fender is $700! Does this seem excessive? The fender wasn't even dented, just a deep scratch.

 

That jives with my last quote. My quote was over $2k for the tank. The damage was just a little dent and some road rash. Easy fix, but they had it slated for replacement. Not sure why.

Now I don't feel so bad about my tank... When I got my bike, there were two big turn signal dents, one on each side. I eventually found an NOS FXDX tank in vivid black that had never been on a bike. It still had the factory shrink wrap on it. I had a really hard time deciding to buy it, and tried to haggle with the eBay seller (unsuccessfully). I don't remember exactly anymore, but it was somewhere in the $800-$900 range I think. I had it ceramic coated right away. It least it's still pretty much perfect. a few years later...

 

This is a disposable society. Nothing is repaired anymore. It is easier, and sometimes less expensive, to simply replace it.

Besides, in the case of insurance claims, it shouldn't matter if you aren't footing the bill.

I have the same color on my bike and every painted part from HD is exorbitantly expensive. The price of the paint for the Hard Candy line on the bike sticker was $3K. Ouch.

 

I believe my 09 FXDL tank was going to be 1600 to 1700 to get a brand new one.... I bought a used one dent free on Ebay for 250 shipped.

 

I guess it is what it is then. Ceramic coating is sounding like a pretty good idea.
