My retired father volunteers at his local shelter. He and Mom have a dog but he finds the rehabilitation and placement work extremely gratifying.

His eyesight is failing and mom has been investigating Service Dogs for him. Both as help and companion. Dad, in turn, is investigating becoming a trainer for Service animals. He works with the Sheriff department as a volunteer and really likes helping the K9 unit when possible.

Getting a new dog is great, but if it doesn't work out for whatever reason, there are lots of ways to fill that void and lots of groups to help salve the loss and remain involved.

Someone once said "Never trust a man who doesn't have a dog". They do something for you that humans can't do.

Bottom line: Retired at 73 and a dog and a hog were all I needed. FatBob is sick, dogs are gone, but you take the knockdown and fight back.

Hell yes. Never give up the fight! I'll consider myself blessed if I can make into retirement and still be able to ride.

You will and well beyond. 73 and feel 30. You younger guys/girls have a lot to look forward to. We're all healthier than the last generation. Just keep moving.
