I've witnessed the CHP using a decibel measuring microphone on Palomar Mountain, in a location that was fairly hidden to riders until they make the 180 degree turn. They were very "tight lipped" about it. This was a couple years ago. Don't know if this is the result of that research, or not.

You guys are missing the whole point of this " new " law, isn't about noise it's about a new revenue source hence the 1K ticket. They are expecting to make good money on this the first year trust me and the fart can & muscle cars & trucks will be the prime targets, bikes will get the hardest at popular spots and tourist areas. Problem I see coming once this gets out there to the general public the snitch line will never quit ringing when gomers stuck in traffic get pissed at lane splitters, racking the pipes is how I let the idiots know when they crowd things.

We went through the same hoops legally when the helmet law was first shoved down our throats they had no clear guidelines, interpretation and enforcement varied city to city, you could get hassled 3 times in a 5 mile ride and get different story each time on whether your helmet was legal or not. Only thing that was consistent was the fine amount.

Well, I'm a little conflicted, not sure if I should send my new pipes back or hang on to them. Not like my bike is going to be racing loud, just worried about that $1k fine. Damn, that sucks.

We get the point. It's just that we're more vulnerable to a fine if the fuzz pushes it. I think most bikes are within reasonable limits.

Oh they will be out after low hanging fruit trust me, the dig me boys are going to feel it. Look for spot checks at popular hang outs on weekends, it'll be easy money for them.

We have a similar law here in Pa. I spoke to a state police officer last summer about my Bassani RR and he said that load pipes were a "Dick ticket" In plain english he said that if you're acting like a dick, ei. stunting wheelies etc. They WILL pull you over and cite you for your pipes. If you're just out having a good time and riding responsibly, they couldn't care less. Of course, that could be because Pa. is part of the United States and Cali. is another planet.

Unhappy

Still, $1,000 is pretty steep.
