Default Best Gear Ratio

I have a 2012 Dyna Switchback that I have enjoyed riding for my first motorcycle.

I am going to change out the pulley for a gold chain and black sprocket set up mainly for looks.

I was planning to stay with as close to stock as possible which is pretty close, but is that my best bet? Being a newish rider (2k miles) I am sure I trust my opinion.

Would like to hear about opinions based on experience with different ratios on the 103 especially.

Your stock is 32/66, so around 2.06, but most people try to get closer to around 2.3 to 2.5. I'd suggest a 24/54 or 25/54 ratio. If you want closer to stock then maybe 25/52.

I presume I would need to use a programmer to optimize for the gear change? Or would stock mapping be flexible enough to work?

If you get away from the stock ratio the speedometer will be off, but that can't be fixed with programming the ECM. There are some devices out there that can massage the signal from the transmission to correct the speedometer though. There are also programmable speedometers, aftermarket ECMs, and some piggy back modules from the aftermarket that let you adjust the speedometer. No tuning needs to be done.

What kind of speeds do you cruise at on the freeway? What percentage do you travel on the freeway? How low you can gear will be dependent on those two questions. If you’re going to spend the dough to change the sprockets, you might as well tailor the bike to your riding style.

Can you elaborate? I do almost strictly highway riding as I commute to work every day.

The newer bikes are geared too tall. My 08FXDF was 2.79. The 30T pulley moved it to 2.97.

Most tuners all for gear changes.

That opinion is dependent upon the speed you cruise. My Ultra Limited is doing about 3,100 RPMs at slightly over 80. Which is a quite regular speed.. As such, I wouldn’t want a lower overall ratio. My TriGlde on the other hand could use a taller top gear. I like the low range from the 30T on the TriGlide vs. the standard 32T transmission gear for low end grunt. But, at 80MPH the motor is spinning about 3,500 RPMs, and that more than I like to cruise at.
