Installing apes on a 2012 Dyna

I'd like to know if it's necessary to de-pin the electrical connectors under the tank in order to remove those wires from the bars as well as fish them back into a new bar. Just talked to a guy that did the job on his 14 and didn't have to de-pin anything, but did the job on his buddies 2009 and told me he did because of the larger deutsch connector? Both Street Bobs. I've got a 2012 Street Bob. Anyone do this job specifically on a 2012?

I had to de-pin the wires on my '11 Street Bob to fit them into and out of my bars.

Very interesting. 2014 did not, 2009, 2011 did. I've done several ape jobs but find it interesting in the different years and if/when Harley changed the size of the connectors.

I know it's not year specific but I had to de-pin the bars on my 07 Wide Glide that had the 1 1/4 bars. It's a pretty easy job, in fact the pinning part was probably the easiest part.

I'm pretty sure they changed connectors sizes... looks like 2012 was the year they changed the connectors according to some diagrams.

Well, I'll know when I get in there. I moved the stock bars up onto the 3 inch risers and had them dis-connected then, but can't remember what size they were. i want to say they were the smaller connectors. Maybe I'll get lucky.

i just depinned my connectors yesterday for T-Bar swap; 2014 street bob
i just used a large guage sewing needle to get the connectors off the wires. there is a youtube video of someone showing how its done, and its a street bob too.

i think youll know once you unhook the tank and pull it back or off, you can tell by the connector size. One is too big to fit through bars so you have to unpin it, the other one you can fit it through the bars so you dont have to. Youll know when you see it.

So I am doing a bunch of work to a 2010 SB and trying to disconnect the bar wires (to remove the triple tree & forks and replace the bars), I have the tank off, but can not find the connector to de-pin? I can trace all of the wires down, I have disconnected the clips/quick connects for the blinkers (covers on those wires almost look like phone cables), I have disconnected the larger quick connects (for the tank/gauges etc.) but can't find where the bar wiring clips in. Any advice for finding the connector to take the pins out?
Other than taking the forks and triple tree off (for powdercoat) I am also looking at the RSD 16" King Ape bars. Seems like there is clearly some slack in the bar wires, if I de-pin would I need to extend the wires anyway to mount the 16" King Apes? Currently planning on leaving the stock integrated riser set-up. Obviously want to avoid cutting if I can help it.

New to the forums so appreciate any thoughts or advice. Thanks all

- Mike

On the bottom side of the backbone of the frame there is a plastic cover. It attaches via spring tension into two holes in the sides of the back bone. Press those "buttons" in and the plastic piece will come out of the bottom where the connectors reside. You can pull those out, un-plug and de-pin from there.
