Replacing cam chain tensioner on 2001 fxdwg2
Hi all,
ive recently purchased a 2001 Fxdwg2 with just under 26,000 miles. After reading about the tc88 problems, I need to know if I need to get this checked out and replaced and if so, what should the replacement be? Thank you |
I'm not sure if you have an auto chain tensioner, but I think they are garbage. I have an 06 WG and it had my chain way too tight. It will keep ratcheting up any slack. I went with a Hayden chain tensioner and have about 5k on it with no issues. I will open up primary later in the year and inspect it, but it is quieter and it is spring loaded meaning no auto adjusting. Baker makes a nice manual adjuster. I have heard mixed reviews on it though.

Replace the stock pads with Cyco parts & call it good. And since yer in there, new inner & outter cam bearings, mild set of cams & new, quality lifters. Your cam chest will be 'right' & you'll have a nice bit of extra pep in your step for your trouble.

Just go with geared cams, so much better. Just gotta check your run out. Should be ok on an early Twin Cam.

Yes check them. If you want cheap do like Carl said, Cyco pads.
If you want to fix it go gear drive cams. Should be $7-800 in parts. |

Just noticed this was cam chain and not primary. I went with S&S gear driven cams when I hit 30k. My pad wasn't in bad shape.

Don't assume the runout is good because it's an 01, check it. Was all set for gears on the 01 until the TIR measured .004. Went with new Cyco shoes on the stock chain tensioner.
