Top End Noise

I have a Stage I 2016 Street Bob and I'm starting to get a chatter/knocking noise.

It sounds like it's coming from the top end.

I've read through many threads regarding the subject & have found many different causes/solution.

My question is where do you start looking to find a solution?

I've read changing the oil to dino which I might do but I've been running syn for the last 25K miles and the noise just started recently.

I'm also going to check my Baker Attitude adjust and see if it's out of adjustment.

Where should I look next?

Should I pull the rockers and check the clearances? Check the lifters?

Thank in advance for your help

You will be amazed at what you can hear with a screw driver. Put the end of the handle against your ear and touch drive end to cam chest / lifter blocks / rocker boxes which is were I think you will hear the rocker shaft ticking.

My $0.02
Pull the rockers and start looking. It can save you lots of $$$$$.
Ask and I'll tel you the story about "the lack of a nail, the loss of the (horse) shoe - - etc."

I installed Rockouts last weekend. Made a huge difference. Now the top end sounds like it supposed to. Install was a piece of cake. I am running RedLine
20w-60.
As a bonus I got to see how crappy the machining process is at the factory. I found large burrs everywhere inside the rocker box ports. I guess it’s too hard to throw parts in a tumbler during manufacturing.
Half the inside of the rear rocker cover was blasted with wrinkle finish.
Disappointing

Did the same thing, installed the rock outs on my wife’s Switchback and it made a huge difference in getting rid of that ticking noise coming from the rocker boxes....

Ya, I don't think that's the issue.

It's a pretty loud clacking sound not a minor tick.

It starts once the engine has warmed up even at idle. It speeds up with the RPM's as well.

I think I'm going to have to pull the rocker boxes.:icon_cry: Wish me luck.

Those are the same symptoms I had. Sounded like there were a bunch of washers in rocker box covers.
Got pretty bad when the bike hot and my 2-1 exhaust it pretty quiet. Drove me nuts. I was a little concerned when I didn’t find any witness marks on the bolts but it was definitely the problem.

If you pulling them, throw them in anyway. Only $15 and will take 5 minutes if it’s already apart.

On second thought, I think I just might. Pretty cheap fix.

That's exactly what it does. It get's louder when it's hotter. It's been getting into the 80's over here and it sounds bad.

Here's a video of it.

It doesn't sound that bad right now because it's pretty cool at the moment.
