I am on a trip and noticed I was dripping just a touch from the derby covor initially and then it appeared the shifter seal had leaked a little too and it concerned me. I believed I possibly had just reused the primary gasket one too many times and gathered up what I needed to replace it and top off any lost fluid.
I had also been having trouble getting into nuetral and hoped my clutch adjustment would last and maybe correcting the fluid level would help.
Well, when I took off the derby cover with the bike as straight up as I could get it I had a river of fluid come rushing out.
I've been thinking my bike has been burning oil the last few months, but I'm not sure most of it hasn't been leaking into the primary.
I'm 1,000 miles from home and midway through my trip. Should I just rent a truck and haul this thing home? I can't handle it leaving me stranded in the summer temperatures.
I started using Lucas synthetic in the bike recently and it is actually supposed to be formulated for all three holes. I'm not sure that helps if it can be limped back without a repair done immediately.
Could this be due to whatever primary bearing issue there is I was warned about or is it most likely that I just over filled a hair at some point trying to keep the oil level up and that created the problem?
What would be the outcome if I kept riding it? Will the leak eventually get to the point the engine oil will all just go straight into the primary, etc?
Did you look in the air cleaner housing for some of the missing oil, quite possible too much oil in the oil reservoir and the excess got blown back into the engine. Did you service your own primary and possibly over service it, just asking. I would ride it home on some U.S. highway route versus interstates. You be closer to a shop (dealer or indy) and speeds will be slower. I've used the derby cover gaskets many times but when you mentioned drips out of the derby cover it raised a flag for me about too much fluid. I thought the 06 and 07 had the primary bearing issues, what issues have you heard?
I know this is an old thread but this information may help someone who uses the search function.
I had the same issue with water in the primary oil. It turned out to be a bad starter gasket which let in water when the bike got wet like when parked in the rain.
A new starter gasket fixed the problem completely.
Hard call for someone to advise without looking at it. From what I am hearing if it were me I would re-assemble, get new fluids at local auto parts (most sell Mobile 1 20 50 and Lucas) and run it home. I would stop often to check it. Ultimately your call. I have an 09 myself.
