As a card carrying member of the old farts club who has had his day of buzzing around at 7-8000 RPM, I have no qualms about putting down the road at 1800-2000 RPM now, as long as I'm not giving it a lot of throttle. The issue with low RPMs is high cylinder pressures, and you don't get that at low throttle settings, so why not?
So, I could easily be in 6th gear at 55 MPH... It depends on what's coming next.

Yes , thats the only clue you get as to what gear your in......the switchback gives you the gear and rpm's in the odometer window....ust throwing it out there.....as for 6th gear never actually used it except for the initial highway ride albeit 5 miles.

I have a cam that has a torque curve that comes on pretty good at 2800 and for me in 6th that is about 65 on level ground.
If you lug a motor it will knock. Not good. But our motors have a knock retard capability and it senses the knock and retards the timing. So the motor just seems to bog down.
Charles Lindbergh used to run his airplane motors way over square (rpm and manifold pressure) and he got phenomenal mileage compared to others. My mileage is down to about 35 to a gallon. I have been experimenting with running 60 to 65 in 6th but so far it has not helped anything in the mileage department.
