You got 2 choices.

Tighten it til it starts to strip and back off 1/8 turn..

Do them by feel. Locktite the thread and molly grease under the head. Tighten until you feel it get snug then continue until it gets tighter a second time then stop.

I prefer the second method.

Everyone knows the Harley shifter is a weak point. I would do it by the book and hope for the best. Below is a pic of my 2011 Street Bob stripped out on a 1500 mile trip last summer. I got it fixed by Woodstock HD in NY after a highway fix and it stripped and totally broke again 500 miles later (no disrespect to Woodstock HD they took care of me big time).

Anything past oil plug tight requires experience. I snug everything then snug it again....a system taught to me by my Dad a diesel mechanic.,

Max is on point here. I go a bit farther.... use a grade 8 cap screw with a smooth flat washer underneath, along with the lube

One of the thing most miss, is that if it's allowed to run loose for any period of time, it will require a couple/ few re-tightens before it will stay tight. The only reason why it's a weak point is due to failure of proper maintenance. This is not confined to HD. Any bike that uses a splined shaft and clamp to hold in place an arm be it a shift lever, clutch arm, etc can have this issue. I've seen the problem on a number of different motorcycles.

which in turn begs the question, what kind of maintenance? does the spline shaft get neverseized? lubed, dried out, rust preventer? all of the above??
