DomHarley's 2016 Switchback
All right! I think it's time for me to elaborate more about my project. This would be the thread only about the build of this bike. I own this bike only since Summer 2020, but a lot of things as been made on it since!

I got her with 36 000 miles on it! The bike came totally STOCK!. The day I took delivery of the bike, I took off the windshield and the sissy bar. Don't ask me how is it with a Windshield, I never tried my bike with! :) https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...0b984531f4.jpg The day I see her... Was dirty, but I saw potential https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...6e8faca97f.jpg Finally home!!! And clean ;) Ones of the first thing I did was to change all the fluid... Even if the Dealer told me they all already changed, I don't trust them. So replace all 3 holes with fresh regular oil. Did the sparks-plugs, air filter, fuel filter... You know, just the regular maintenance stuff!! https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...131b7c6b96.jpg Old fuel filter vs new one!! Next step, the SEAT!!! Since I always ride solo on my bikes, ( my wife got her own bike). One of my friend got a solo seat from a 2009 StreetBob. So I try it and it was "Okay" for just 1 hour ride. More then this, I can't feel my back anymore. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...ee692d1fdc.jpg With the StreetBob solo seat installed! And the week after, the first major change happen! The Handlebar!! Since I wanted the cholo look, I choose to go with the LA Chopper 16" Original Apes with the Magnum Shields cables. At the same time, why not swapping the riser rubber mount with poly's? ;) https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...e11e88fd6f.jpg Let's assemble everything! https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...23f80ac156.jpg Changing the rubber mount for poly's ones! https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...c7a08418bb.jpg Test fit the bar before https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...2e1c4f6bd6.jpg Test fit before! |
I got my hand on a Power Commander V Tuner... so I uploaded the map from the website and ran the unit... Honestly, I din't see any difference... It's normal since the bike is totally stock at this stage!
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...5b616d5c3a.jpg Now after 2 weeks on ownership, here how the bike look like https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...1c9cdc582c.jpg One the most first important thing to do is to relocate the crankcase breathing system. I took a clear vinyl tube (good for hot temp) and a T brass and I screw a little breather filter behind the orginal air filter. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...0c99a8d730.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...2b523c2c06.jpg One common noise that's lot of people heard come from the rocker arm. I don't remember where I got the parts, but it's a brass sleeve slides inside the rocker plate witch prevent the bolts to be loose and making the noise. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...6b1833f927.jpg Finally, I got the first exhaust (Yes the first because I changed the exhaust 3 times since). One of my friend use to have a Switchback in the past and He sold it, but He keep his Scremin' Eagle Nightstick. Honnestly... It's the UGLIEST exhaust I ever see! But one I removed all the dics and I paint only 1 disc black, it was not so bad.... for now.... https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...7194679505.jpg 2020 was a really busy year for me and my wife, we build our new house so I din't have alot of time for the bike! :) Couples of weeks after, I decide to get the headlight bezel, front and rear turn signal lens and at the same time did the relocation of the front singal to the fork using some exhaust studs... Don't remember I think it came from a RoadKing. Oh and I changed the grips and got the chrome brake/clutch levers. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...d9003f9686.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...05f24a4f05.jpg At the end of the winter, the bike was a this stage... https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...cd11ac9dce.jpg |
SPRING 2021!!! WOOOHHHOOO!!!!
Like I mention earlier, I hated the StreetBob solo seat since day 1!! After alot of research, I finally put the trigger on the Saddlemen Step-up seat!! And man!!! It's one the best thing I did on this bike!!! On the same time, I removed all the side reflector (Forks and bags latches) https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...11d2916a30.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...c8c45bb758.jpg And this is how the season start! https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...a7830cb1bc.jpg I drove 3 weeks with the Screamin' Eagle and I hate it... I always been a fan of Vance & Hines so here the TwinSlash Slip-On. I decide also the decat the converter, I bring the header at work, cut the hole remove the stuff and weld back the door and put 3 coat of high temp paint to prevent rust. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...81cc9771be.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...37bfd16429.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...7e9f4523f9.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...26b3b015b8.jpg In the warehouse at work, I found an hold front fender from a Sofrail Heritage... I took the from trim and tip and make it fit to the Switchback fender! :) https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...cce19a3195.jpg Now, here one of the major modifications!!! The front wheel! It took 3 months to get my chrome Ultima King Spoke 21x3.5 at my shop! Once I receive it! I wrapped with a brand new Avon Cobra 120/70-21. You don't need to make any modification on the fender. And also, you need new front rotor to match the wheel.. I replace at the same time the brake pads! https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...147174db6c.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...705d9a07d8.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...130ff82e10.jpg |
I sat on my couch looking at the bike... I now she need to be lowered. Time to get a new pair of rear shocks I guess!
I chosse the Progressive 430 11" Chrome... I wanted the bike to be at the lowest point. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...b3fbccaa71.jpg Once installed, it make all the diffrence! Changed the grips again for a more traditional look https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...b557f8bd16.jpg I took several pictures of the bike and I found out it need to be lowered at the front also! Time to get the Progressive Drop-In kit!.... I drop it 2" https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...202588ef7d.jpg Received the springs! https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...a946fd7615.jpg Before the front drop https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...378a53043a.jpg After the front drop! Sometime, small things changes the whole look of the bike! I receive my CycleSmith Banana floor board!! It's really a Chicano style floorboard!! They ares expensive, but you can now stretch your legs for forward https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...42d746d367.jpg Put an order at Harley's dealership for all the chromes covers on the engine ( Primary, Transmission, Rocker boxes, cams covers and tappet covers). Took them all off, replace all the gasket See the picture, old aluminium cover on the left and the new chrome one on right! https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...2da75cfa19.jpg I want to get of rid of all aluminium on this bike, now I have to take a decision on the fork... Chrome or powder coated black.... I let my wife choose and we go with black. By the time the lower fork is at the powder-coat shop, I decide to make more style with a white wall front tire. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...76f92480a3.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...f2ac55ab3a.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...3648e51806.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...52a5c3cfcd.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...a88bc0f4c8.jpg Added chrome Colony Spike front axle cover and a new cam cover with the HD MoCo on it. This is how the big look like as today https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...a22a31bb65.jpg |
I decide to change the handlebar again.... There is a local company in Quebec called Iron Hold / MV Precision who made really great custom quality handlebar. I put an order on the "Gangster" style made by Carlini. Meantime, I'm redoing all the internal wirings for the handlebars and I changed the stock black switches caps for the chrome ones.
As yesterday, this is how the bike look like now! https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...3827119e01.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...a4ee6182ff.jpg I also received my new rear wheels I choose again Ultima King Spoke 16x3.5 but the tires ares backorder now... gonna have to wait to get it.!! https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...1a1c208d23.jpg |
Very nice. Glad you're changing the rear wheel also. People don't seem to customize the Switchback muce, nice to see someone doing that.
|
Did you have much flex with those apes using the stock risers?

Honestly, I didn't find any differences from any others kinds of risers... I drove a lot of bikes with apes and the only thing different between each ones ares the length of the bars. I don't see why I would change the riser. Can someone please tell me what ares the benefits to change the risers?
