Trying to get some new life into this thread, it's been very quite lately.
I am swapping the stock laced wheels on my '17 FXDB for '17 FXDL cast rims this winter. I'm going to need new bearings front and back, so any recomendations? Stick with stock?
I've used both Timkin and All ***** with no issues. I actually had both side by side and popped the dust caps off and they looked identical. In both cases I was surprised how little grease was in them though, so I added more wheel bearing grease. I posted photos several years ago but can't find them now.
I'm interested in what tools you guys use to extract them and replace them. I know this job is coming up someday and I need to buy some tools.
I'm not doing a removal since I'll have new rims. For the install, I'll probably take it to a shop, my winter mod budget is tight enough without buying more tools.
I use SKF and Nachi bearings. Timken is fine also.. It will be a standard 6204-2rs 6205-2rs c3 bearing.
The current George's tool looks good. It has the inner ridge to ensure an even press in on the second bearing. Some of the pictures of Jims tools have issues.
The part that moves the bearing in needs to look like this..
If it only has the outer ridge, bearing will die. Flat is OK..
For instance this one can cause you to eat bearings.
