Default 2012 FXDC Throttle / TPS Issues

I’m at the end of my rope on this one.

I bought this 2012 Dyna Super Glide Custom in August. Love it. She rips. In November, I feel like I won the lottery when I realized there was a V&H FP4 tucked under the seat. I don’t know what was flashed to the ECU when I bought the bike, but as soon as I flashed a map with the FP4 I started getting diagnostic codes for the TPS (P0122 and P0123 high/low open). Weird coincidence, I have no idea.

Screw it, threw $50 at Dennis Kirk and bought a new TPS. But… codes won’t clear and the issue is still there. I don’t think it has had an impact on performance so I just dealt with looking at the check engine light all winter.

Today I finally got around to diagnosing what the hell is going on. Bought an OEM TPS from the local Harley joint and ran into the same issue. But I at least was able to start seeing an issue. When the TPS is plugged in but not hooked up to the throttle body I get no TPS codes. But when I put the TPS on loosely without screwing it in, it’s not aligned with the bolts (rotated further than the bolt pattern expects). This means that when it’s not hooked up, TPS shows 0% throttle position and when it’s hooked up it shows 7% throttle position. So… it’s not a TPS issue, it’s an issue with the throttle getting stuck open a little.

The throttle cables aren’t holding it open. The throttle stop screw on the throttle body isn’t keeping it from closing. I sprayed it real good with throttle body cleaner. Nothing helps.

What would keep the throttle from closing to the 0% point on the TPS? I genuinely don’t know what else to check and I’m so f***ing frustrated. Or… am I missing something to reset the zero point of the TPS???

Sorry for ramblings and typos. If something doesn’t make sense, please ask. Today’s post is sponsored by Daydrinking with Miller Lite.

I really really appreciate some guidance from the community on this one before I take it to a mechanic.

It started right after flashing a new tune? Have you tried a different tune? Fp4 prob has the ability to set throttle position.

Why did you change the tune if it runs good?
Why didn't you go back to the original tune to rule out the tune as the issue?

FP4 doesn’t have that capability based on the options presented to the user. I sent V&H an email. I think you’re right and my brain was processing this as an issue with physical components. Will report back!

I don’t know what the original owner had flashed. I did run fine though. I was getting ready to take it for a dyno tune and then discovered the FP4 under the seat. Figured “what the hell” and wanted to try some of the tuning options available through V&H. Looking back, I should’ve just let the damn thing alone.

I flashed the stock map and it is still an issue. That was my first action.

There might be a throttle position setting in the FP4. It’s not something that shows up for me in the settings, but I sent an email to V&H for support.

Yeah that’s all good. Not the issue there.

Took it to the local HD dealer and they flashed it back to stock. All codes clear. TPS showing full closed when the throttle is closed. VSS is displaying the correct gear on my odometer. All is good again. This was an issue with the FP4 tuner and/or the map that it flashed. Vance & Hines sent me a modified map based on the stock map from HD. A little nervous to flash that since all of the error codes have cleared….

Isn't there a way to store the current map and reload it if things go south?

Yeah what they sent me was the stock map. There’s no option to load a “new” stock, so I had to upload it to them and then download it from them.

I decided to roll the dice and download/flash the “new” stock map in FP4. No check engine lights. I’ll try to run autotune based on that map and see what happens.

Feels like progress.
