My 96 low miles dyna has been laid up since last september, while it's been off the road l've changed the bars, l reinstalled the original clutch cable tonight but it feels excessively stiff, the bike's not running atm pending a new carb so l'm not able to fully test it although pushing it about in my garage in gear it doesn't seem to be fully disengaging, with the clutch pulled in l can move it with the lever back to the bars but only just....is there something l'm missing or should be checking....l also have a couple of other newer bikes(HD) but their clutches are a lot easier.
Is the cable plastic lined? Is the any curves nice and smooth not tight turns?
Plastic lined cables don't need lube they need to be cleaned. I injected methylated spirits through mine and it made really smooth. I put a dab of grease at the top to stop water going in.
Because it's been sitting for a long period, the disc's are probably a little dry.. Get it running and take it for a ride then check it..
This would be my first guess. Had this happen to bikes in the past. Clutch plates can stick together if it sits for a long time. Taking it for a ride usually clears this up but be a bit cautious. The bike might lurch forward when put into gear.
+1, it took me 3 tries to get in right on my '98 but the clutch is now smooth with a relatively light pull and that has lasted for over a year so far. FWIW I used Dupont spray teflon lube...
