Default K&N HD-1499 Vs. Stage 1 Upgrade ??

Hey guys...

As stupid as this sounds, I really dont want to lose the football cover, I kinda like it. My main question is:

Has anybody just added the K&N filter to the stock airbox, got some pipes ( I want just the Screamin' Eagle slip ons ), & got the harley map ?? How did it run ?? What i'm lookin' for is pro's & cons. Is the performance much different between a stage 1 & a K&N " drop in " filter ?? Any help you guys could give me would be greatly appreciated...

Thanx
Chap

Can't really help you with your question...sorry...but I couldn't help but reply to your post. I actually dig the "football" too! Tells everyone what I'm riding

That's cool man. Atleast i'm not the only one that likes the football cover. Plus, i saw the wrinkle black on & it's perfect for the Bob. If anyone else can help out, i'd appreciate it.

Thanx

I installed a K&N air filter on my '91 FXRP about 3,000 miles after I put the new Andrews EV-27 cam in my bike. Then took it out to Sturgis from here n WI and I did notice a bit of performance increase from the easier breathing it provides. I would suggest putting a cam, freer flowing exhaust, and the K&N filter on and "noticing a difference" immediately. I got a huge increase in my passing capabilitys from just the cam alone. I kind of checked my gas mileage after the filter install and got a bit more mileage but not a ton. I did notice better git-up-and-go.

Hope this helps?!

I'm confused. The stage 1 aircleaner uses the stock (football) cover.

Adding the replacement K&N filter to the stock airbox will help somewhat over the stock air filter, however the taller K&N in the stage 1 kit has a taller profile and breathes much better, it also uses the stock football cover. The trick is to get as much air into the engine without restricting it as it can use. The K&N tall filter will support anything up to around 100 HP where as the replacement K&N for the stock airbox falls quite short of that.

I think that's what you were asking here.

It does use the stock cover... Ok, I thought it made you change over to a round cover, which is something I didnt want to do. Cool. Now maybe I can get the best of both worlds, get the Stage 1 & get a K&N filter. I've had K&N's in all my bikes & loved them, so that is why I was wondering.

Thanx

Thanx TC, that is exactly what I was asking for. Just got in $600 in parts, so now I know what to put on my next order. I really appreciate it.

For those who have replaced the stock SE a/c kit's paper element with the K&N, will this filter make an already lean stage one flash even leaner?
