I'm running the SE 180 on my 06 Wide Glide stock rim with no problems whatsoever. I didn't use any kit. Tire mounted right up with no fitment issues. May be more clearance under my bobtail fender though.

any trouble on a stock 06 dyna sg rim..i've been thinking about a wide tire but read somwhere that it might be safer on a wider rime than the stock sg has..
The SE tire that comes in the "kit" is made for the stock rim so there shouldn't be any issue. Other 180's are made for wider rims but I've seen and heard of people putting them on the stock rim with no issues. However, I've also heard they don't look as good on the stock rim as the SE because they weren't designed for it. I've had one person tell me that, if you aren't going to use the SE 180, you are just as well getting a 170 of another brand.
170 of another brand? why? I had the Dunlop 180 (didnt know better, paid for the kit). The 180 didnt pass inspection ay 7k miles. I replaced it with a Dunlop D407 170/60r-17.. Looks Good and I've got 10k on it now and still has that to go.. Lots of tread left. Its almost unbeilveable on the wear so far. When this one finally goes I'm gettin another. Its cheaper, great pattern, and is wearing great...

Okay, based on a wide tire discussion thread a while back and not my personal experience, it was said that the 180's made for a wider rim installed on the stock size rim look sort of funny because the beads are pulled in more than they are actually made to be so it messes up the profile of the tire and appears to be more rounded where the sidewall meets the tread. I haven't seen it first hand so I don't know but it sort of makes sense. On the other hand, the SE tire and kit is specifically made to allow a 180 tire on a stock dyna rear end so you get more of a true 180 width and look. And since you don't get that with other 180's, you'd get a nicer look with a 170 since it's wider than the stock tire but doesn't round off so much as the 180's do. Again, that's what I took from that discussion in a nutshell. It's not my first hand opinion.

It was also discussed just how quickly the SE tire wears. However I'm willing to try one out. I only have about 6600 on my stock rear and it recently passed inspection but I don't see it going to 10k. If I can get 7k out of a SE tire, I'll be happy with it. If 5k or less, I may look at something else.

Yea I seen what your talkin bout.. If a rim is too wide for given tire then it has a flattened out look, and on the curves you run the risk of no tread on a tight lean... on the other hand if the rim is too narrow the tire has a bolloned look and not useing all the tread available. My question was why you said 'a170 tire of another brand'.. I was just pointing out that I have a Dunlop 170 and like it...
I thought maybe you have heard something bad about the dunlop 170 that I should watch out for... No mater what you end up doing the wider than stock is a nice thing.....

Okay, or a Dunlop 170. I just meant, if you are going with another brand 180 that may be designed for a wider rim, you might be better off with a 170 based on what I've seen discussed. Doesn't have to NOT be a Dunlop.

The kits got nothing to do with the rim. Its for re-routing the signal and taillight wiring.

how about we think of tire dimensions?

SE harley tire 180/60/R17

Avon AV56 Storm 180/55/R17

now i have run both of these on my motorcycle and I only get about 3,000 miles a tire or so because i like doing holeshots and peeling out here and there...tires are cheap!

180mmx60%= 108
180mmx55%= 99

the only thing that is changing is the height of the tire by 9mm so I really don't see any advantage of the SE tire other than it says screamin eagle on it. If you go with the 55 series tire your tire will actually curve out less and will have more contact surface

for anyone who doesn't know how tires are sized it goes as follows...for example 180/60/R17
first number 180 is the width of the tire in milimeters
second number is the percentage of the first number to get height so...60% of 180mm=108mm
the third number is the size of the rim so...R17=17 inch rim...

hope this helps

cool info, skyrider.... but most indy shops and certainly no harley shop i know of will mount that avon tire to a harley rim....that dunlop tire, however, is designed exclusively for harley and the 4.5 rim
