Charcol canister?

Is there a link to a thread that explains how to remove the charcol canister that came on my 08 street bob? I know they are not on all bikes, but out here in CA they are....thanks!

Nick

RE: Charcol canister?

there is somewhere. here is the quick and dirty.

the plastic straw running up the throttle side of the bike from the canister to the tank is connected to nothing. just pull it right out. you can literally pull the charcoal canister off the bracket. I actually gave mine a kick and it popped off. or you can get down on your knees, figure out how the plastic triangle tabs fit into the metal bracket. the bracket has little tabs that if you push on them (i think), you can slide the canister out. just kick it off. on the clutch side, there are two tubes running up to the tank. I just snipped those off where they connect to the canister and left them zip tied to the down tubes. i'm going to the dealer this weekend to pick up my bike and they told me they would show me what to do with those two tubes. i think they just pull out, but i'm going to check.

once the canister is off, you have to remove the metal bracket which has two bolts. these bolts run into the motor mount. i used a jack to hold the motor and keep it from moving, then undid the two bolts and pulled the bracket off, then put the bolts back in. alternatively, you can loosen both bolts, take one bolt out, rotate the bracket put the one bolt back in then rotate it and take the other bolt out. that way, you don't have to completely unbolt the motor mounts.

What's a charcoal canister, and what does it do, anyway?

It's a CA emissions thing. Watch out for the motor mount. I took mine off when I first got my bike and I was still learning about it. Lets just say I scared the crap out of myself when I took that second bolt out and the motor dropped! As for the hoses. Like what was already said you can yank the one on the throttle side. As for the other two, one is a vent from your tank and the other is a vacuum line. I clipped them both a little shorter and plugged the vacuum line then zip tied them together against the frame.

Ah. Okay, now what does it do? How many HP is it good for? :D

The tubes supposedly catch fumes from the tank and routes them to the canister which 'cleans' the fumes before releasing them into the environment.

As for HP, I think I'd gain 2-3 by lobbing it off, but I think I may gain more leverage by turning it into a drink shaker or a "stash" box. ;)

Removing the vapor canister:

The single hose on the right side of the bike from the vapor canister goes up under the tank and doesn't connect to anything it is just a breather hose you can just pull it out.

On the left side of the bike you have two hose's coming off of the canister. The canister is labeled carb / tank, disconnect the tank hose and follow it up the frame to a little vapor valve, remove hose from the bottom of this little vapor valve and remove the hose. This is now your 49 state tank vent, you can also get the 49 state vent hose that connects to the vapor valve and runs up under the tank, it is in the Harley parts catalog (99439-06A) item 13 on page 90 p/n 27296-04 and a retaining clip item 7 p/n 10113.

Disconnect the carb hose from the vapor canister, this line goes up the frame and under the tank to a connection behind the top left side of the air cleaner, it connects to the intake manifold, disconnect and put a cap on the port of the intake. (In the Harley parts catalog (99439-06A) on page 20 they list a cap plug item 21 p/n 90383-98 that might be the one to use.) This hose is difficult to remove, I took off the rubber hose from the plastic tube by the intake and pulled the hose out from the front of the tank and broke off a clip that supports a harness that comes out of the bottom of the tank, but I was able to ty-wrap that harness to another harness under the tank near the frame. If you cut the plastic tube end off that has the ridge, it will not hang up on anything and it will just slide out.

The vapor canister bracket has a clip that you depress and then the canister can slide off the bracket. Loosen the two allen head bolts that hold the bracket on to the frame, remove top bolt then rotate bracket and put the bolt back in and tighten it down, then remove lower bolt and bracket, reinstall lower bolt and tighten it down.
