Welcome from South Texas and yes, Harley's make engine noises. Pipes will fix that as others have said - noises are still there, but you won't be able to hear them over the pipes
If you're looking for an inexpensive way to change the sound I'd certainly consider slipons. When you're fat you can get what you really want and sell them for almost as much as you paid for them. I've got V&H slipons on my Bob with "quiet baffles" and love the sound. It's much more noticable than stock and has that deep rumbley (yeah, I know thats not a real word) sound but when you twist the wick everyone will know you're around. As for the whirring noises you'll notice some in 5th gear as it's straight cut and consequently makes more noise. There are numerous reasons Harleys make noise. Some have been mentioned here. If in doubt, see your dealer or Indy. They should be able to discern between good noises and not so good noises.
Poppa, the engine noise you hear is normal and the fact that you hear it is thanks to the EPA. Once you get your Big Radius pipes, it will magically disappear and be replaced by a nice rumble with an occasional crack of thunder corresponding with how hard you crack the throttle. In the meantime, you could consider some slipon mufflers to give you more sound. You can always sell them later when you are ready for your pipes and get some/most of your money back.
another Chi town welcome! ya the noise is typical from a HD... i use Mobile1 in my ride and it helps a bit but not too much... the primary makes the most noise... enjoy the wind brother
