Has anyone here ever seen a thread about premature wear/damage due to the brand of oil used, syn or conventional, in an engine or transmission???

Has anyone here ever worn out a transmission gear or bearing due to using motor oil in the transmission?

I found this report which involves some rather extensive testing, and easy to interpret results, although it was prepared for Amsoil, so I don't know whether that casts doubt on the findings or not.

Same study I linked to, with an affidavit on page 26 stating that it was prepared for Amsoil.

Thanks. I just finished reading all of that report and there were some surprising results noted. Good read.

I guess this is as good a place as any to post this question so here goes .......
Did any of you who use a synthetic motor oil (any brand) in the crankcase notice the motor noises being any louder than with dino oil? I've heard from several they run the dino just for that reason, it's quieter. I would think it might be the same issue in either of the 3 holes. Whadaya say?
Thanks and regards, Joe.

Yep, I'd have to agree. The ticking from the rockers is more noticeable for me. I plan on addressing that problem with a set of Rockout inserts, which IMHO are a good idea for the TC anyway.

This comment will draw flack, I'll bet, but eschewing any "clearly superior" synthetic oil on the basis of a "waxy" dino oil's ability to quiet things down is,,,, wrong thinking IMHO.

Rather than just rant from a warped perspective, I have tried to go to other mfr sites to find THEIR oil specs, on both motor and gear oils. I have not found them all, however the ones I did find were pretty much in line with the "slanted study" done by a test facility for Amsoil. My mother used to tell me that if I had nothing nice to say, keep quiet.

Default Oil Change

What oil and filter do I need for my 07 Ultra Classic? Also, is there an additive that needs to be added?

I would (and do) stick with the standard oil and oil filter that Harley sells.

No additive is needed.

And personally after a great deal of experience with both, their regular 20/50 is sufficient not the SYN3 for normal biker riding.
