Alright folks I wanted to see if anyone had any ideas on what could be going on with my '07 Bob. I rode out to a hill climb yesterday and was having some issues with how the bike was running on the way out and some major ones on the way back.
I filled up with gas in a small town where i met up with some friends. Of course they didn't have 91 octane so I put in the 89 since that was the best they had. The bike took 4 gallons which struck me as odd because i'd only run here 101 miles since the last fill up. 25mpg was far off my normal 35-40. But I pushed on anyways.
On the ride out (around 80 miles each way) the bike seemed to misfire 5 or 6 times. When it happened it felt like strong momentary deceleration and I noticed the speedo would drop to 0 and then come right back up.
On the way back it did a bit more misfiring but it also started just stalling out. Twice while I was at a stop sign and 3 times as I was crusing down the road at 65mph. There wasn't any audible warning like it misfired. Just shut right off. It would start right back up without any issues.
I'm running a PCIII with Python Staggered Duals (VH BSS) and a Ness BS1 air cleaner. I had been running the Fuel Moto supplied map from Jamie but for the past month i've been running the canned map straight off of the PCIII website as its almost identical to my set up and wanted to see how it performed.
I have two initial thoughts. I could have gotten some bad gas. I was the only one in my group to fill up at that station and the only one who had problems. My other thought was that something goofy went on with my fuel system prior to this ride (especially with the 25mpg) and my plugs might be fouling out. I didnt get a chance to check the last nite as I got back late but I'll do that later today and probably put Jamie's map back on.
Thanks for the idea hog.. that thought crossed my mind as well. I had a brother who had similar problems on a nightrain. But just like you said it didnt really explain the bad MPG. Of course that could be just a one time thing and maybe i was driving a little too sporty around town.
Joe, forgive my ignorance on this but how do i run a diagnostic on the bike? Is that a DIY task or do I have to go to the dealer for that? I've done all the maintenance on this bike so far so thats not a problem. I just didnt realize you could run a diagnostic on it...
I had similar issues back in June/July when I was home on vacation. Prior to going home the dealer had to replace a module in the electronics under the seat and I questioned if they could have changed my map accidentally. I have a custom map that was done when my bike was Dyno'd last year. It's possible that's what happened, but the dealership also stated that they have been finding pinhole leaks in the fuel line inside the tank, causing air to get in the line. So, until they get around to my bike before I'm home again in October, I won't know what the issue is.
Jake, interesting situation you have. I haven't had anything replaced so I dont think that anything other than the PCIII itself could have messed with the mapping. The pin hole leak problem is curious as well. I've read other members on here who have had that and from time to time i have smelled a little bit of gas fumes though nothing that would really make me stop and have a big whiff of it.
What about a bad or failed gasket on the exhaust?? I have the SE gaskets in there that everyone hates. I guess i'll have to give it a good strong once over and see what jumps out. I'm curious to see what Joe's response is on how to do the diagnostic.
thanks a bunch Joe.. i'll have to check it out tonight when i get home. Between that, the wires, and maybe just bad gas.. i'm hoping to get this thing solved.
