56 Super Glide Restoration

Hello All first time here but understand this is where I need to be for some true assistance. Here is the problem. I and my buddy Fil have recently picked up A 56 Super Glide with a pan motor. It is a mess but restorable. I have pulled the tanks which are internally rusted and looking for some originals. The carb is FUBAR and after it is cleaned and disassymbled a rebuild kit. I am looking for manuals and all the help that is available. Thanks for reading this and I'll send you some pictures if you want to see my mess. Thanks and have a great day.

Didn't the Super Glide come out in 1971?

All I can say is this was one of the first with an electric started along with the kicker. The emblem states super glide however the original owner says it is an electric glide. Frame serial number is C8553 if anyone can figure out what I do have please let me know as this is my first Harley. Had to start somewhere. I also have a 65 Sprint if anyone knows about them let me know. Thanks

Yea, 1971. Maybe it is a Duo-Glide or Hydra-Glide. One thing for sure is, though, if it was manufactured in 1956, it's a Panhead.

You are correct, it is a mess. The Superglide came out in 71 and was a Shovelhead motor. They did not have electric start or a superglide in 56. The first kick and electric and the only electric start panhead was 1965. What you probably have is a 56 motor in a stripped down frame made to look like a superglide. Either way, good luck trying to figure this one out.

A '56 would be a hard tail. Obviously, a '65 pan was the only factory electric start Pan head which means you either have a converted '65 Electra glide to Superglide conversion or a panhead dropped in a post '71 FX chassis. Whats the VIN number of the bike?
