Ok here is the deal. My neighbor has a 2007 HD Street Bob stock. He wants a little more sound without spending alot. He went to the local Stealer and they told him that he would need a PC3, big sucker or a/c in order to be able to add RUSH Slashdown slipons. Is this true or are they blowing smoke up his A**?
He just told me that "THEY"(the stealer) told him if he just added the slip ons his engine or heads will crack after a year of just slip ons without the A/C and PC3.
If you add the AC and the slip ons, your gonna run lean. Lean is hot. Heat which could lead to cracked heads, among other things. Chances are it won't run as well, either. You will have to add some form of fuel enrichment(SERT, PCIII, even the stage 1 download). There are some exceptions to this, of course. There are owners on this forum who have installed both without a tuner or download, and haven't experienced any problems. Not a chance I'd be willing to take personally, tho.
The slip ons by themselves shouldn't give you that lean condition.
There's also a cheaper solution to the exhaust upgrade solution. There's a thread started by Gary7 about the 'ultimate street bob muffler mod'. I've done this mod myself all for less than 50 bones about a 1/2 hour. He calls it the Jekyl and Hyde mod because it's really deep and subdued at idle, but will rattle windows when you open up the throttle. And my bike still runs great.
It might actually run better, but it's hard for me to tell because I find myself grabbin a little more throttle just to hear the thunder!
My local dealer puts RUSH slip ons on almost every new bike they get in the shop and they do it without doing the remap and the intake. They have always told me that the RUSH pipes are designed to give better sound and a slight increase in air flow without the requirement of the remap. I have D&D slip ons and I heard you can have them without a remap. Don't take the dealers word for it though, call the tech support for RUSH or D&D and ask them. I am sure they have done tons of testing and if they have had people complaining about burnt up engines by not doing a remap, they would tell you.
Put any brand of slip ons on, or modify the stockers. If you're concerned at all about the fuel mixture, find a set of Xieds for sale on the forum here and you'll be fine.
Here's the before/after dyno sheet on my '07 Softail. Rush 2.0 slip-ons were the only change. Note the a/f ratio is virtually identical before & after installation.
Have an '08 Fat Bob with khrome werks slipons only. Sound great and the bike runs great. Does not get any hotter than before. Call any manufacturer of slipons. I called Khrome werks. They told me if I just add the slipons I don't have to do any other mods. The Rush guys told me the same thing. Either set of slipons sounds great and look just like the stock setup,(if that's what you like). I got the KW's for $269.00 off the website. I put them on in less than a half hour myself and saved the labor money from the dealer. It is sooo easy. Your dealer is FOS and a crook.
