Default help, rear wheel install

sorry for the double post guys, posted in tech but thought the dyna guys might be able to help me out... need a quick response.
re: 98 FXD.
just had a new tire put on and i reinstalled the rear wheel on the bike today. i understand the rear axle should have a torque of 55 to 65 ft lbs (per local dealer). i don't have a torque wrench and my neighbor, with the same bike, said to "just crank it down". should i get the torque wrench? is there a bearing load index that needs to be accounted for? will i freeze up my wheel or damage my bearing by over torquing?

thanks a lot
dan

That's exactly the reason for having the proper tools. Factory sets the torque specs to avoid the axle being too tight and possibly overheating the bearings. Not something that you want to happen. My advice, buy, rent or borrow a good torque wrench. I went through the same thing two weeks ago with my '04 FXD, I bought a Craftsman at Sears for about $79.00 on sale, the click type. You'll use it and it will pay for itself in no stripped bolts, etc.

98FXD,

If you don't have the sealed bearings, make sure that you have the proper axle end play. This will require a dial indicator with a magnetic base. The end play should be between .002 and .006. The proper torque is also essential.

regards,

Bill

Your local Auto Zone will let you borrow a torque wrench. Will probably require a deposit.
