Default Arggg!!!! Fuel ???

I asked before about the gas gauge and I know it's crap so this time I used the "fuel range function" on my FB.

Today I rode about 130 miles before the "fuel range function" said I had 27 miles left and my fuel light came on. I pulled into the station to refill but only got 2.89 gallons in before the nozzle shut off. Pulled the nozzle out and the fuel was at the top of the neck.

Am I and idiot and not refilling this thing right or are all my gauges screwed up?

I would say your gauges are not right...

Gauge and all are run off a variable resistor attached to it a float on a shaft in the tank. Due to hills, lean angle etc, the fuel will swash in the tank and as such the fuel level gauge etc all getting info from that float that has gone to the low position for a period of time will set the fuel lamp for roughly a 1 gallon left in tank. Not a lot can be done about fuel moving in the tank so best bet is to mental note mileage and if you just did a long term lean angle turn or hill climb/decend.

The only thing that seems reliable is the trip meter- the fuel guage is way off, my low fuel light comes on at half-tank. I never had a bike before this one that had a guage or low fuel light so I relied on the odometer and the reserve petcock, which at least were consistent.

My 09 fatbot fuel gauge is dead on accurate, and so seems the countdown considering the half gallon or so safety margin. So have many others reported when this topic came up a couple weeks ago. I can usually get about another gallon in the tank (to the bottom of the fill tube) after the nozzle automatically shuts off.... so perhaps you are not completely filling... or you could have a bum gauge. Don't know how to check it short of draining the fuel left and comparing it to what you expect from the gauge reading.

I don't rely on the guage. I usually check the trip odometer periodically or just unscrew the cap and look in to tell when I need to refill.

I usually fill up in the Superglide when I get to 1/8 tank around town and the trip odo says about 160 miles. About filling up I usually don't run the pump full blast because the airaition of the fuel will cause the pump to shut off early. I run it about half speed and don't have to usually go back and put more in.

+1 on your tips. Use the trip only and you will fine. Ignore the fuel light. You should get near 45 per gal right?

Default Removed mine

I removed my gauge sending unit and all. I got tired of fogged up innaccurate gauges. I had mine replaced under warranty twice, bought one out of pocket and then went with a Dakota digital which was nice but then I lost the sender. After a total of four gauges, leaks etc. I gave up on this headache. When I pulled the dash I found the gasket had been leaking on the sending unit, for the second time, and this time did minor damage to my paint. I then decided to jerk the whole mess. I repaired the paint. Made a stainless steel plate to go in place of everything. Put in a nice thick gasket coated in Gasgacinch gasket sealer and welded the hole up in the dash, re-powder coated it and now do it the old fasioned way...Odometer. Loving life again. Sometimes simple is just much better.
