Minor little dent on the gas tank. No visible damage anywhere else. Some dirt in the shock.

I was able to pick it up, no thanks to the wrecker driver who wouldn't help, talk to the cops then head on home. It drove fine but I didn't go above 50mph home. It seemed to me like it might have been shaking a little.

What can I expect to need to be fixed? Should I take it to the dealer to be inspected for damage? Do the handlebars bend easy? They look fine and don't appear to have shifted at all. Just looking for input. This is my first bike. Made it 2000 miles and 9 months without incident. Like the phrase about bikers who have and hadn't laid them down - at least I have it out of the way now. And glad to have been wearing my DOT helmet and Harley leather jacket.

My bike, yesterday:
Quite a stroke of bad luck, glad to hear you're alright. As for the bike, if at all possible I'd find a way to cover up the dent. The tank is will be right on top of $900 if you choose to replace it, and I would definitely get the handlebars checked; they're not very easy to bend, also if they have been bent and you bend them back into shape, the metal is going to be much weaker (because the crystaline structure within the alloy will be broken).

I would be indifferent, but leaning more towards not taking it to the dealer to get it checked. I'd probably break down and do it eventually, but if the damage isn't that bad I'd hold off. They'll charge you an estimate charge of whatever their minimum is whether they get it done sooner or not, probably. Just my two cents.

Yeah, mine have been dumped 3 times, one backing up a driveway, taking off on turn, then engine died, and early am, wanted to sharp turn into parking space, no tank damage on any of the three. just some bike battle scars.

sorry to hear about your bike. glad you are doing ok.

For peace of mind you may want to take it to a reputable dealer for a damage assessment.

yeah, i looked at the bike again today. bike looks alright. i re-adjusted the handlebars to center and they seem fine... but i feel like i'm looking too hard and noticing anything not perfect.

bummed about the turn signal. oh well. the dent is the most irritating. i don't know how it dented. any of ya'll ever do the paintless dent repair on a tank? the dent i have is minor but noticeable. it's right above the pinstriping on the black portion on the left side.

I laid my FXDF down at the end of the driveway last year. I had just slowed to a crawl, leaned into the turn to pull into the driveway and saw my son backing his jeep back out and heading right for me. Next thing I knew I was on my right side holding the bike up with my knee. I still don't know what happened. Had a big knot on my knee for a while. I got a dent in my tank from the turn signal when the handlebars twisted back. That may be what dented your tank. I also scraped my pipes but I put some SE's on. I eventually replaced the tank. I tried everything to get the dent out. Figured I'd take the old one off, have a shop work on the dent and try some paint schemes. So far I haven't done anything with the old tank. It's in the shed.

I bet this would make an interesting thread on the board: How I dumped my bike...
Bet it would get a lot of responses. Glad you're okay!

Yup....I have the same dent in my tank from the turn signal. If you notice, when you crank the handle bars as far as they go, the turn signals stop about 1/8 inch from the tank. So, with any weight on the handle bars, you'll end up with a dent in your tank. I've left the dent there as a reminder of how it happened. I will probably get it fixed this winter!!!!
