Check your battery to see if you have enough juice to engage the sprag clutch.

yea i did put it on a jumper and it just spun faster no engagement..

Not sure if it will work, but put the bike in a high gear and try to move it a little...maybe the teeth just aren't catching right.

Your starter solenoid is shot. You don't need a new starter, just the solenoid but you'll have to take the starter out to do it and change out the solenoid with a new one from HD. Not that big of a deal....I'm on my second change.

When that happened to me it ended up being a starter clutch. Cost $100 for the part. It was pretty simple to change out. Had to take the primary cover off and reservice it.

Ding ding ding!!! that is what happened to mine 1 month ago.at first it would skip a bit then engage and at the end just spinning, ++ the good news is the replacement part is an enhanced part so this should only happen once.

yea starter clutch is what Im thinking... i think i might by a ultima starter off ebay found one for 147.00 shipped and sell the stocker, so i dont have to mess with it and get a nice all chrome one to go back in... anybody think this would be a bad idea???

I assume he means starter clutch, which is what it is
if it is 06 dyna or later you can pull the starter from the outside without removing the pri cover
