paint question
 

OK I have a question for y'all out there who know about paint touch ups. I have a vivid black 09 superglide and I found a small paint chip yesterday on the rear fender. It barely just barely went through the clear coat so I took a toothpick and touchup paint and SLOWLY built it back up. It looks good except it still needs that thin layer of clear coat (and sanding I am guessing) to make it look near perfect. I am an amateur painter at best so I figured I would let a pro take it from here . I called the local HD dealer and they directed me to their local guy who does their paint stuff. I talked to him and asked him if he fix the blemish and polish the whole thing as well. He said he could do it but "it would look like a little blob of paint" on the chip and I might as well do it myself. This struck me as a little odd coming from someone who the dealer uses so I thought I would get some opinions out there before I use him. Any thoughts anyone??

You had already started the repair. JMHO. If it did not go thru to the metal no color was needed. rubbing compound and elbo. grease could have done th job. again jmho

again being an amatuer with touch up paint how risky is using rubbing compound when it comes to swirl marks?

Most of the time, the scratch is in the clear anyway. Clear coat turns kind of white when scratched. So, a lot of times the clear can be sanded and polished by someone who knows what they are doing,, and no touch up is needed. If it was in fact a chip, just touch it up, then use some clear nail polish to go over that. That willbe about the best it will look without actually repairing the spot and reclearing the whole fender. Hope that helps.
