08superglide engine clatter

almost out of warranty. whats the deal with the engine clatter. not a ticking sound like lifters but almost the sound you would expect to hear from the working components of the engine. always had older bikes most with cams so i didnt hear too much other than the pipes.
this is my first new stock bike and under light load but not at idle i hear this noise that i can only describe as a clatter.
bike with 3000 miles and has synthetic oil. anyone tell me is this what the new 96inch motor is supposed to sound like?????

Bad fuel or low oil will clatter.

From my experience, yes--pretty much exactly as you describe. Have a tank lift on it?

My motor sounded much as you described when I had synthetic in it. Doesn't sound that way with dino oil in it,

mikatt98 12-04-2009 09:11 PM

dont understand tank lift but the bike is straight off the showroom floor superglide custom 105 anniversary edition with no mods ........yet

If I don't run premium fuel, atleast 92 octane, mine willl clatter under light acceleration.

mikatt98 12-04-2009 09:21 PM

i always run the highest octane available. it not a ping that im sure of and there is no detination under acceleration. warranty expires right before ill get back on the road regularly. sounds like the beginning of a murphys law thing.

I run N.O.S. octane booster and Marvel Mystery Oil. This improved the situation greatly. A fuel management system will be next, but 93 octane at the pump just didn't cut it.

I noticed that lifting the tank removes some of the sound dampening provided by the fact the stock tank height has the motor slightly recessed up in the tank. When I did the 2" lift to mine, it seemed there was a noticeable increase in the amount of clatter and noise.
