I found the stock position to be way too far back for me too. Pushed them almost vertical. As the others have suggested, use blue 242 Loctite but do not overtorque them.

what do you mean by changing the controls/grips. I thought they were pretty much in a fixed position? Lastly if I do like them as they are which will make me reach a bit higher, any idea on how much of a riser you can put on and keep the stock cables?

Rap...I believe any change in riser height will cause you to change out the brake line at a minimum. The throttle cables would be stretching it too.

Alrighty, well I really do appreciate the help. Will do when I get my bike back later today. I don't have the money for new bars/install, so I thought I'd go the cheaper route by getting risers. Would all the interal wiring be stretched to? If, so I imagine I just should wait for the cash on bars heh.

Meaning if you move the bars far enough the hand controls wont be oriented the same. For instance, I went so far forward with my bars that the clutch, brake, and directionals were practically facing the ground .... not straight ahead. So, you'll need to loosen those up and move them where they need to be for comfortable riding. Easy process .... just watch the brake line close to make sure you dont bind/bend it.

It's no problem to tilt the bars forward a little, but it will stretch throttle cabels some which can cause the throttle to stick when front end is turned all the way to the right. Also, the clutch cable will be stretched a little and will bind some and effect "fall off" of front end.

Snug up the front screws so there's no gap between the clamp and risers, then tighten the back ones to 12-15 ft-lb. Use blue locktite.
Dude,

Where did you read this? It got me thinking about the riser bushings too, cuz I'm planning on switching to poly. I looked thru the service manual (official H-D) and didn't see a word about handlebars, other than the switches.

Please point me toward this info...

THANKS!

The torque spec is in the critical fastener table in the manual, riser clamp screws. The part about snugging up the front screws was in the instructions for some H-D risers I bought.

Make sure you loosen the clamp holding the front brake lever and master cyl before you go pushing the bars forward. It's real easy to crimp the metal brake line if you put too much stress on it. I must have short arms or something because I had to pull my bars back towards me to get comfy. [8D]
