I use the royal purple or mobile-1 brand 75-90 gear oil for both my tranny and chain case since the very beginning. I researched a thread on this site of people using gear oil. I don't believe in using the same motor oil in the transmission. Should I change my tactics? I never had any problems with the bike or changing gears since I got it.

American (harley davidson) transmissions have always had a little clunk sound to them especially when dropping down into first. this can vary depending on how warmed up the transmission is.
You can reduce it by using quality oil, but you can't change the transmission so the clunk will never go away.

Proper filling of the primary is to only fill up until you can see the oil hit the lip of the clutch. on my 03 this tends to be 2/3rds quart. over filing can cause clutch slipage

Also, when you can't buy harley or vtwin oil you need to buy the heavy weight oil for a diesel engine. 20-50 is diesel oil i believe. I don't know of anyone running it in there stock cars.

hope that answers your question on the "clunk"
It totally did baker, thanks very much for taking time to help, as well as all the others on this forum, THANKS!

ATF feels good on the clutch, but is crap for lubing the chain. Don't use it... I ran B&M Trickshift for 4000 miles.... didn't like the amount of aluminum suspension in the oil... primary was much noisier also.

I bought a 08 Fat Bob first of the year and had the dealer put syn3 in all three holes and it's louder than it was with the harley conventional oil. The transmission clunk is even louder. I'm getting ready to switch all three over to Amsoil 20w 50 so it will be interesting to see what happens. Past experience with Amsoil in my Auto's and atv's has been excellent. One thing I have learned it's all trial and error with what works best.

I've run trickshift atf, Harley's primary oil, and now amsoil 20/50. The amsoil has been the best.

Here's a good tutorial on changing the primary oil:

The manual doesn't say how to check the level also, do you just pour exactly 32 ounces into the hole after you remove the primary cover please?
I used Mobile 1 20W-50 synthetic for the main motor so is this a reasonable choice for the primary also or is ATF better?
I'm hearing Mobile one V-Twin in the engine (20/50), Mobile One 10/40 Synthetic in the Primary, and Mobile One 75/90 in the trans. Got 20/50 in the primary now, I'd like to confirm the 10/40 thing before I go that route.

2008 dyna primary takes 1 quart:

1. drain old oil and reinstall drain plug
2. fill through derby cover hole (there is no inspection cover)
3. use any of the following:

Syn3 20w50
Formula+
Mobil1Vtwin 10w40 or 20w50
Amsoil 10w40 or 20w50
Mobil1 atf
Amsoil atf
Redline MTL (what I use)

4. replace derby cover tighten screws to 100 inch lbs...forget about it.

The thinner the oil the less cold clutch drag but the more primary noise. I use MTL which is a 70w80 trans gear lube with no moly. Pours very thin like a 5w30 oil so very little clutch drag but gives the chain very good lubrication. Lots of guys use Mobil1 ATF as well.
