Default Looking at a 2000 FXDX

I'm going to check out a 2000 FXDX, one owner tomorrow night after work. What can you long time Harley vets tell me to look for to make sure I'm not missing any problems? The budget is tight, so it's either a used Harley that I might have to wrench a little or nothin'! No caving and buying an "import cruiser" on the cheap from me. Thanks in advance.

Scheduled Maintenance performed?
Change oil (all 3-holes)
Fork oil should be changed, regularly.
Neck, and rear fork bearings should be greased.
Tires, Brakes.

Known issues:
Cam bearings should be replaced.
Cam chain tensioners may or may not wear out before scheduled 40k miles. (need to open up)(crap shoot more or less)

The Superglide is a great choice. I had the T-Sport and it was the best handling Harley I've owned.

I had problems with the inner-primary leaking on mine. Took it to the stealership a couple of times...then I took it to a real mechanic who fixed the problem.

Hi Snacks and welcome to HDF.

The obvious things to look for are service history and anything unusual that has been done. The only likely problem that can bite you, as kpolak pointed out, is cam tensioners. In early TCs these can wear very fast, although there are some high mileage bikes out there with no serious problems. If 'your' bike is low mileage or they have not been replaced you could use that as a bargaining tool. Whether you do the job yourself or get it done there is a good fix available with hydraulic adjusters (also gear-driven cams as an alternative) but you should not let that put you off buying the bike, especially if it looks good in every other way.

Cam tensioners has been done to death on HDF, so get yourself a long drink and take a browse! You will find it covered in all the forums where twincam engines are used.

I have an FXDXT and you will find that stock the FXDX and T have raised suspension with better quality stuff than the other Dynas so you are looking at a tasty bike! If you prefer long and low it may be not your thing, but it can be changed.

Ask what motor work was done on the bike. There were many cam bearing failures in the Dynas in 2000 and later.

Thanks for all the tips guys. I'm doing some research now on the tensioner to see what I'd be getting myself in to if they do need to be replaced. And like you said grbrown, if nothing else, it could be a very useful bargaining tool. The bike has about 26k on it, so if it's not been done yet, it sounds like it very well may be time for it from what I've been reading.

Not sure what your plans are but there is another FXDX on ebay for 5100 obo right now buddy. Shipping isn't more than $500 anywhere in the country.

Wow that is a good deal. The bike I'm looking at has some aftermarket equipment on it, of note is a detachable touring windshield, Corbin seat, engine guard with highway pegs and the turn signals have been relocated to fit bags. It's got 26k on it and they're asking "$6800 MAKE OFFER." So from those prices you guys are talking on eBay, I shouldn't jump if I'm not decently under $6k. I'm assuming the cam work will still need to be done but I'm not sure on that yet. That sound about reasonable?
