Default belt tension!~

i recently adjusted the belt tension on my 06 FXDWG and now i hear a sort of whining sound when i decelerate. Especially when i'm above 30MPH, i can hear it sound almost like its rubbing, but not even that loud, it just whines, sort of like a jet engine slowing down (on a much smaller scale, or course).

any ideas? i don't think the belt is too tight, might this be a sign that it is too loose?

i also check the tire and stuff around the drive train and couldn't see any visible wear on the parts.

any help would be appreciated! (i know, now i'm whining too!)

Already checked the inside part of your rear fender? Could be the tire scraping the wires of the turn sigs....

Is the axle the same distance on both sides?check to see if the belt is running true might be rubbing on the side of rear sprocket.

Since it wasn't making any strange sounds prior to you adjusting the belt, I would suggest, you attempt to do it once again. Make sure you are not making it to tight, and as stated above, check your alignment.

I would redo everything again. Also check your spacers and bearings.

I had the same problem with my FXD. I described it as a "howling" sound in the range of 30 to 50 MPH. Since the bike was new, I returned to the dealer and they adjusted the belt tension and it was fine.

Then, after my 1K checkup, the noise returned. This time it was worse. Another trip to the shop and all is well. The tech told me that sometimes they have to set the belt tension slightly looser that the service manual calls for.

I wouldn't go TOO loose though; I read that most belt failures are from being that way, not from too tight.

"i don't think the belt is too tight"

First off there's no room for thinking. The belt is either to spec or its not. The entire job is either done to EXACT manufacturers specs or its a hack job and could very well be completely unsafe to ride at this point. Simple as that.

Do you own a proper factory service manual?
Did you use a proper tension gauge and ruler?
Did you use it properly?
Did you align your axle with a proper tool?
Did you use a torque wrench on your axle and every other fastener?
Did you verify the tension with the rear wheel on or off the ground?
Did you do it hot or cold?
Is everything to spec?

Belt tension is an easy thing to mess up. You press up on a tool, if you move the tool at all upwards while attempting to put the 10lbs tension on it, your gonna have a belt too tight. Just keep it simple, twist the belt to 45 deg. If you can not twist to 45 deg, it is too tight. And more than 45 deg is too loose. See simple, effective and the belt will last a looong time without making any noise.
