Default Help! Im riding along when out of the blue

my starter tries in engage ...what a noise so i pull over and shut her down .when i turn the ignition on the bike starts ...not touching the start button!! im out in the middle of nowhere with my buddys girl on the back soo i figure whatever it is its fuxked so i take her home the noise stopped in a couple minutes ...it still starts but the while its running the starter still tries to engage ...any ideas as to why ??? my bike is a 2000 wide glide with 5500m on it. my shop manual kinda leads to the ignition reg switch .

Sounds like a shorted wire, perhaps in the hand controls. Something is making the command for the starter to engage.

have you washed the bike just recently with the hose or pressure washer? Water in the switch housing has been known to do that.

Of course it's a short. It's gotta be. Starters don't just engage because they're in a happy mood. They'd rather lay around and not be bothered until something tells them to do their job.

Fix it. Now. Not tomorrow or the next day. That starter hits just right and your repair bill won't be just for tracking down a minor wiring problem, it could get seriously out of control. If it were me, I'd trailer it to the repair shop. But that's me.

Just my $.02

had the same thing happen to mine with 300 miles on it. luckily i was about 1 mile from the dealership when it happened. they said it was something to do with the switch and to be careful when washing the bike. they fixed it a for free and it hasn't happened again. i was really pissecd off, because the salesman was going to use a switch off a showroom bike and get me out of there that day, but the service manager through a fit and said i'd have to wait for a new one. he's not working there any longer!

Same thing happened to me. Destroyed the starter, pinion gear, and primary tensioner when the shaft engaged.....not pretty. It was the switch.
