Default Wrecked my 08 FXDC

Hi all, I wrecked my 08 FXDC on Monday. I was hit by a van making a left turn and had no where to go. The ride is messed up pretty good, front end has a major wobble in it, handle bars are bent, windshield is fubar, and other assorted damage from landing on my left side. I am bruised and sore but I am alive. Now I get to wait 7-10 days for the estimate from HD to give to the insurance company. Does anyone have any experience with how they figure weather to total or fix a HD?

Glad your ok!!! The decision to total a bike is different from one insurance company to the next and also from one area to the next. I had a friend that had bent forks they totaled his bike and another friend had almost same damage and they did not totaled his.

If the frames bent or engine case busted, they'll total it out.

Well that sucks! Glad to hear your ok. Bikes can be replaced. Too bad we can't just blink and change all intersections into roundabouts, and eliminate the left turns!

Glad you made it out only bruised. I'm always puckering up when I see someone waiting to turn left.

Haven't worked in insurance in a few years but in my experience, if the damages associated with your bike exceed a certain percentage of the bike's Actual Cash Value (ACV), the bike will be deemed a total loss.

The percentage is usually set by state law I believe. If I recall it was somewhere around 75% usually but don't quote me on that. If damages exceed your state's percentage, the insurance company has no recourse but to total the bike.

Also, here's an example of how Progressive might handle total loss situations. They give a few examples. It's likely that your own insurance company will have similar information posted on their website. Check it out.

Totalling a bike becomes the call of the adjuster when they assess the damages.

If the adjuster is having a bad day, you wont get any favors!

That's a drag... at least your semi-OK. Good luck with the insurance.

Glad you're ok.

I think they figure the total cost of repair vs. what the value of the bike is. If Cost > Value, they total it.
