I use this or my channel lock - either one works fine.

I use similar, it was for my previous bmw. Dead easy to use and no mess, remember to use a glossy magazine cover or similar to roll into a half circle and place under the filter to channel the oil away from your frame into a receptical when you undo the filter.

Default Filter Wrench

I use a strap wrench that was made specifically for oil filters. I have the end cap style also, but the fabric strap never met a filter it couldn't remove and without slipping.

That's the one I have and it works great.

I use K & N's Filter, like the nut on the end.

I got a strap wrench from tractor supply fits a 1/2 inch drive rachet with extension. Cost about 4 bucks and will remove any filter.

Gettin the filter off is easy it's keeping the oil off your engine block and motor mount is the trick!

Default Oil From Filter

With the bike on the jiffy stand, I use a punch to flat spot the filter end at the top and bottom, then I drill a hole at the top and bottom. I put a cheap flexible cutting board under the filter to drain it into an oil catch pan. If you warmed the oil before you started and let it drain for about an hour, before removal, there isn't much let for the front motor mount.
