I'm stumped
Ok, I've had an issue recently with my left side turn signals. They won't work at all. The right side functions fine but nothing on the left. I have a 2001 FXDL. I figured it was the TSSM so I purchased a brand new TSM (went without the security). I unhooked the battery for at least 15 minutes and plugged in the new TSM. Turned the ign switch on and hit the left turn signals... still nothing. Right still functions as it did before but dead on the left. The front running light is working on the left but nothing when I hit the switch. Can anyone give me any help with troubleshooting this issue? Should I look into replacing the switch next? I haven't done anything recently to the bike except change out the grips, but that was done over 6 months ago and the turn signal worked fine after the grips were changed out.

Check out this thread Turn signal troubleshoot and youl find lots of info.....

I know this might sound stupid, but did you check the bulbs? Maybe they have both burnt out.....
|
yeah checked both bulbs... swapped them with the right side.... bulbs worked in the right side turn signals

check for voltage going to the switch and then comming out. this will tell you if its the switch and what direction to look.

Remove the taillight lens, check to make sure all connectors in there are good and solid, i had a wire loose for the signal and would not work on my 2000

Before you go any further, remove both bulbs, rotate them 180 degrees, and give it a shot.

Check the turn signal ground wires. Check voltage on both sides of the switch, you can jump 12 volts before and after the switch to see if the problem is the switch. When you jump power after the switch and the signals still don't work, you have a bad ground. You can verify that by running a jumper wire from a good ground straight to ground side of the signal lights. I don't have a 2001 electrical manual, or I'd tell you if the ground is shared by the front and rear lights, (which would make sense considering your symptoms) and where the ground located. Double check any plug connectors in the harness too. Electrical is easy to trouble shoot if you have a plan, and basic knowledge of electrical theory. The manual is really a must have for location identification. This might sound complicated, but it shouldn't take more than a few minutes to find the issue and a few more to fix it.

I guess this was the issue. I pulled the taillight out and had it dangleling there, then did what CarbideDude suggested and they started working... with the old TSSM in it. So I figured it was the bulb issue. Put the tail light back in and had the same problem. So I pulled the tail light off again, made sure everything was plugged in correctly and snug, put it back in and bam... lights are all working and blinking like they should. Thanks for all the help and suggestions guys. Also, I went ahead and put the TSM in that I bought so I have a TSSM if anyone knows of anyone that needs one. Part number 68922-00 |
