New front chrome caliper is leaking on 1999 FXDWG..How to fix?
 

I bought a new chrome stock replacement front caliper and when I put it on and bled it, it leaked. So I bought a seal kit and replaced the seal and dust boot. The piston looked in great shape. But it still leaks and the brake lever builds up the pressure but after it sits a while it loses some pressure but builds back up quick. It looks like the leak is dripping out towards the bottom of the piston where you pop out the retainer clip. Hopefully that makes since. Any suggestions??

when you took it apart did you clean out the area where the rings sit? did you put ATF fluid on the gaskets before you re installed them?

I did clean it out, what is ATF fluid?? I was told just to coat the seal in the brake fluid... but Im guessing thats wrong?? And would I put that ATF fluid on the seal and the bottom dust boot? I only have one seal.

auto trans fluid is what you want to use on brake seals, we coat calipers all the time man and that is what we always use. you just put some on your finger, run it around the seal and then put it in the groove, press that piston in there and your good the dust boot does not need the ATF, be sure you clean out where that seat sits really really well bud, they have a tend to develope grime and crud in there

Brake fluid should be fine, id take it back off, clean it up and get it replaced, a new one should not leak and they should have no problem replacing it. Your sure its not leaking around the line/fitting and running down the caliper correct? Be carefull that fluid dont get on your painted wheel.

you can rev bleed the system if you have not drained it... just pump out the piston, then make your changes to the gasket, then fill back up the area the piston goes, from here take off the cap on your back master (be sure you have someone hold a towel over it as it will spray) then push back in the piston, this will reverse bleed the system and goes so so much faster

If that is a brand new caliper, I would take it back and either get another one or my money back. You should not have to change seals if it is new.....
