rear fender widths compatibility
i have a 2003 lowrider, it measures 8" between the struts with the fender affixed in place. (originally from a wideglide of the same year). It also has a 160 tyre on the standard wheel. this all fits fine and dandy but im currently investigating fitment on other fenders.
ive been working on a softail fender as some of you may know, and have fitted right up to the point of only having tiny clearance issues for the turn signals. that fender was 7" and needed sprising out to fit upto the struts then cranking the bolts until it fit flush.
now i know this puts a lot of stress on both the struts and the fender, so im looking into another option.
i want a normal dyna fender, the kind my bike would have had from the factory when it was new, however i dont want to buy one that is from a new model and it be too wide to fit the struts, nor do i want an older model that will have the same problems as the softail fender .
can someone clarify which standard dyna fenders will fit my bike perfectly, obviously the 2003 model will, is the 2006 range upwards any more wide?

what i do know is this, in 2002 up to 2003 thay are the same fender, due to the 150 stock rear tire, 2001 and older were using the 130 tire, so you would be looking at a 2002 and up, not sure but think you will be OK with an 04-05 rear fender in 06 they went with the 170 or 160 tire i beleive..

06-up are 8 & 1/2 inches wide, i believe. My 08 fxd & fxdwg fenders both are.
I am under the impression you can put a bottle jack & spread the struts some (seen guys do it to help clear 200mm tires on 06-up models).
This could be an option for you to fit an 06-up fender since it's only 1/2" difference & the 06-up models run a 160 tire stock (fat bobs & 10/11 wide glides run 180 stock)

thanks for that info, the more i can get before i buy, the better, i dont think id need to spread the struts though, as when i fit the standadr fender on mine, i have to wind the bolts in for the struts to make contact with the fender, id say i have at least a quarter inch gap on each side before i put the bolts in and tighten them up.
maybe an 06 up fender would be perfect, and right now theres a lot more recent fenders on ebay than there is older model ones.

Just showing you these from VTwin Manufacturing in case you're interested. It's a full rear fender similar to a Road King. It looks like you can get them in different widths to suit your needs. I'm in the process of getting the 8.75" version installed on my '07 Wide Glide.
It's a shitty pic and the bike is up on a jack so the rear wheel isn't sitting in the wheel well properly, but this should give you an idea of the look.

Ive been eyeing that same fender, but wasnt sure since it didnt appear like it wrapped far enough around the front. Did you get it finished yet or have more pics of the install?

You're right it doesn't wrap around the front very far. I used the fender extension from my wide glide fender to extend it. No pics of it mounted yet. I have everything apart and should get it to the painter Monday or Tuesday. So sooner or later I'll be able to throw up a pic.
