Default Clutch Adjustment, hard to shift

Hi all,

Adjusted my clutch per the service manual. 2 problems.

1. Shifting is difficult, very hard to shift. When shifting from 1st to 2nd it pops into neutral a lot.

2. The clutch lever needs to be LOOSER in order to get the bike to shift. Seems opposite of what it is supposed to be.

Should I go back in and start from scratch? Also, I changed all the fluids but the problem is still there. Thanks for the help!

Jon

Did you adjust the clutch cable? You should be able to pull on the cable at the handlebar and have at last an 1/8 gap between the the clutch lever housing and the larger part of the ferrule on the cable. Hope this makes sense. If this is right and you were in the primary, you need to start over.

I adjusted the cable per the service manual instructions, and I do get the 1/8 in gap you are referring to.

Simple. You did it wrong. If it worked before and now it doesn't operator error. Once the clutch adjuster bolt starts getting any resistance back it out a 1/2 to 3/4 turn and lock it down. This is done with the cable fully slacked. Then adjust the cable

after you back off the clutch adjustment screw 1/2 turn and tighten the lock nut squeeze the clutch lever several times to set the clutch's release mechanism before you readjust the clutch cable
