Default Motor break in

I just picked up a 2012 Fat Bob a couple days ago and Im pretty stoked. Its pretty comfortable and handles alot better than I imagined. Before I rode away, the salesman siad dont go over 3000rpms for the first 50miles, and then not over 3500 until I get 500miles on it. Im curious how strict I need to be about that. I put about 70 miles on it and there was a few times that I went over 3000 rpms by accident while going through the gears. I didnt hold it there. Just hit it before the shift. He also siad dont lug the motor so Im trying to stay between 2-3K. Im really trying to be carefull but Im wondering if Im being too **** about it. I realize they probably just dont want you riding like you stole it right off the bat. So what do you guys think? How carefull do I really need to be? This is a huge chunk of coin for me so I dont want to screw up. Thanks

I am not sure on how perfect you need to be but just keep doing what your doing and you will be just fine. Another thing not sure if they mentioned it is don't keep the engine constant at a certain speed either. No freeways at a steady 60mph you gotta fluctuate the rpms. At least where I baught mine told me this, I have also heard this while breaking in other motorcycles brands as well.
Congrats and enjoy

My .02
just be sure and dont lug it or accelerate too hard. Mainly just avoid putting a heavy load on the engine. Also dont run a steady rpm for too long of period until you reach 500 mi.

Congrats! Does you bike have a tach? I have a 2011 Fat Bob and I want a tach (on the wish list)....it would be hard to know your rpms without one.

I love my Fat Bob! I would just ride and do like the other have posted! I reved mine up and played with the gears....just don't sit in one spot too long.

I was told from a friend who raced and built motorcycles....ride it like your going to ride it....just don't let it get too hot!

What do you guys consider "a long time" when it comes to constant speed? I hit the freeway a couple times for about 10 miles or less.

I think you might be a little to **** but better to error on the side of caution. My dyna doesn't have a tach so I was guessing at break in. The main thing you don't want to do is lug the motor as that is much worse then going over 3500 rpm's.

As long as your not holding the rpm's and hit it for a second, I don't see how that could hurt anything.

After all, even if you bought it new, how many miles did it have on it? Everytime I've ever test rode a new bike I'm sure I took it over 3500 rpm's and none of them broke.

Congrats on the fat bob, it is a great bike. Enjoy and worry more about the cagers then winding out that motor, you'll be fine.

Thanks man! Yea, Im really loving it. It does have a tach. Its just a digital read out under the speedo but better than nothing. But yea, I was always under the impression that you start off riding the way you plan to ride it. This is my first V twin. Im not used to running that low in the rpms. Its going to take a while to get used to. Sucks because it feels like its just starting to build power after 2500. Im just not sure if they are just trying to protect their warranty or if the low rev break in is really that critical. Im not beating on it but damn, I want to ride! lol. I remember an old hot rod guy telling me if you breakl in a motor driving like a granny, then youre going to end up with granny motor. I dont know if thats bullshit, but it made sense at the time. I just really want to do it right and make this motor last and perform well.

I agree....I want to take care of my baby!....I am getting ready to do the 1000 mile service this weekend. I have reved mine up plenty good.....I just make sure to do it all nice and easy.....I have even got on it a few times on the highway in top gear to see what she would do...got up to 80 or so....makes me smile! from what I understand...heat is the killer. First couple of days I had mine....coming home in 110* heat...I stuck a fan in front of the motor with the garage door open for a bit to help it cool down. Maybe overboard...but it was hot out...and I was riding in that heat!

I rebuilt my motor a while back. After 25 miles or so the rings are seated. Ride it like you stole it IMHO. I did and my bike runs excellent. 56mpg on a ride today. http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm read this and then you decide. I hammered my bike the day after I put it back together. If it breaks take it back it's on warranty. JMO
