fuel gauge wiring confusing
I bought a wideglide tank for my FXD, also bought a fuel sending unit, a friend of mine gave me a fuel gauge gas cap, Here is my question, my bike has only 2 wires for the fuel gauge, black and orange, the fuel gauge that was given to me has black orange and yellow, black should be ground but what is the yellow and orange wires for.

I'm a little thrown off that you bought a fuel sending unit... and why your bike has only 2 wires for the fuel gauge so, for what it's worth...
All the 'guts' in the tank should work in either tank.
Although the top plates are different between the 2 tanks the plugs on the under side of the top plates are more than likely the same. This may also be true of the plugs on the top side of the top plates.
The bike has 2 wires:
black = ground
orange = positive 12v
Is the plug on the main wiring harness of the bike a 2 position, 3 position or 4 position plug?
The fuel gauge has 3 wires:
black = ground
orange = positive 12v
yellow = signal lead (12v) to the sending unit
The plug on the gauge is probable a 4 position plug. Right?
12 volts flow through the gauge and the variable resistor in the fuel sending unit to ground. The sending unit float controls the amount of resistance in the circuit.
To make the 3 wire fuel gauge work you may want to consider getting a 4 position, female plug and at least 2 female socket pins from the dealer so you can re-wire the main harness plug.
Insert the main harness orange wire into position #1.
Insert the main harness black wire into position #4.
Solder a female socket pin to a nice length of yellow wire & insert it into position #2.
Route the yellow wire to the top of the tank where the main harness plugs into the top side of the top plate. That should be a 4 position plug. Position B may already have a yellow/white wire in it, if so... splice the yellow wire into it with a nice solder/shrink wrap connection.

Ok, I see the 2002 FXD is not fuel injected and that it has a console mounted fule guage... which must have a fule sending unit mounted inside the tank.
Does the stock fuel gauge have 3 wires?
Where are the 2 wires for the fuel gauge located?
I guess pics would be helpful, unless you've got it figured out.

Guess i should have mentioned my bike is a 2002 FXD carb, the current fule gauge has 4 wires, 2 long and 2 short that attach to the sender unit and the other 2 to power under the tank, I bought a wideglide tank and sender unit, my friend gave me his fuel gauge and it has 3 wires , black orange and yellow, where do i plug in these 3 wires.

According to the 05 parts manual, both carb and EFI models use the same fuel gauge on the SG, part # 75226-04, so at least after 04 they both use the same gauge, not sure why it would be different before 04.
