Anyone running a fan???
 

Was taking a look on ebay for accessories and came across a LeNale Cooling Fan Kit, was wondering if anyone had any experience with them, and if so, what do you think about it?

I wouldn't be without mine! If you ever ride in congested traffic conditions a cooling fan is a 'must have' in my book.

Are you taking about ones that mount where the cowbell is. I have seen these. These are alot of money.

By cowbell, if you are meaning the horn (sorry, I am new to HD lingo) it does mount above the horn, I think it requries moving the horn down some, but the price wasnt bad. I am not sure it its a top-of-the-line fan or not.

Living here in Phoenix, these have got my curiosity up.

I have one, had to take the horn off Did use the remount kit for the horn. I only need the fan in traffic in the summer

And that is exactly what they are designed for.

Do these fans just blow air across the engine or..............I have seen fans with an oil cooler never just blowing on the engine. Do they work fairly well? SOunds like it from what you guys are saying.

If you do a search on here (sorry, had to say it), you'll find a lot of posts discussing the fan mentioned as well as other brands such as the HD parade fan. There are also a lot of posts on the subject of oil coolers with fans.

I have the HD parade fan on my bike as well as a Jagg fan assisted oil cooler and they both work well in keeping oil and engine temperature down. I have done some limited cylinder head temperature monitoring while riding and while stuck in traffic but only after installing both accessories so I cannot comment on how much they actually affected cylinder head temperature.

Going down the highway 55-65 MPH, my oil temperature maintains about ~170°F. This includes riding on days when the air temperature is above 90°F. Stuck in traffic, the oil temperature goes up to about 230°F and pretty much stabilizes there.

When stuck in traffic, the parade fan comes on automatically as does the oil cooler fan. They keep the engine temperature low enough that the engine idle temperature management system (the one that cuts off the rear cylinder) does not come on any more.

I read a number of posts on here where owners reported issues with the fan mentioned and although most of them reported good customer service with resolving their issues, I decided to go with the HD fan as there were less problems reported with that unit. Also, it came with a thermostat that controlled the relay so it would come on and shut off automatically as needed and I liked that feature. I ended up wiring a switch to the relay so I can turn it on and off manually if I choose to do so, although most of the time I let it work by itself.

From my perspective, anything you can do to help reduce engine temperature is a good thing, both from the perspective of longer engine life and longer oil life.
