I have decided on a pair of Burly 16" Narrow Apes. The nothing above the shoulder law exists here and I am in need of some opinions. I am approx 5' 8" and have a 2011 FXDC. I have a feeling these bars will put my fists slightly above my shoulders (did a makeshift measurement with a tape). I am in the military and there is a strong possibility that I will be moving within the next year or two maybe to a state without the law.
Those of you with taller apes, do you ever run into problems with the authorities? I know it will give them a reason to pull me over but here in Tucson they seem to leave the ticketing to the cameras that are on every corner. Just hoping that my vision of tall apes will not be smashed by, "the freest state" in the nations weak sauce law.
I live in NY and am 6' tall,I had 16" WO's apes on my RKC and they put my hands just about even w/my shoulders.Never had problems w/the cops.I now have a Street Bob and just put 16" Harley apes w/risers kit on that bike. Will be picking it up this friday.Again I don't think they will be higher than shoulder height and if they are it will be ever so slight (I think) and if they are I'm not gonna worry about it,as long as there're comfortable.
I don't think you'll have a problem, but then again I don't know how the cops are in your neck of the woods. If you think they'll give you grief,go w/14" apes, they look cool and should be fine for you.I was gonna go w/14" this time around but I was really diggin the HD 16" so I pulled the trigger w/them.If I had gone w/14" I think I would have been just as happy.JMO,good luck.
I was running 18's on my bike and I'm 6'5 and those were about 3-4" taller than my shoulders on my WG. I just took the risers off and now the 14" bars are just perfect. There were to many times the bike felt unsafe at that height and I ride aggressively. To answer your question though there were plenty of opportunities to be pulled over with the 18's and I didn't have any problems.
I got pulled over when I first moved to tucson but i was wearing a club patch and i think they pulled me over to see what I was doing in arizona. After they measured the bars 3 times and saw how I sat on the bike they grudgingly let me go. That was the last I heard of it . I was running 16 apes on a heritage softail at the time.
Thanks all! This dilemma sucks. Before I had the bike I would have thought someone would be crazy to whine about the small difference of a 14 to a 16 inch tall handlebar. I have read so many posts of folks sayin, "I got the 14's wish I would have went 16's" I do ride rather aggressive (awful MPG) so perhaps the 14's would suit me a little better. Here's to hoping that whatever I get puts my fists at shoulder level.
