My 2 cents- mids with Highway pegs do it all for me- better for handling and control, comfy on the long haul. Position yer highway pegs correctly and you can learn to shift with yer heel and Achilles tendon. And like most dirt bike riders know, you can keep feet on the mids in the wind and under hard acceleration by pointing your toes down so the bottom of foot is on the front of the peg- pretty hard to with forwards unless ya got really long legs.
Like most have said, it is preference. I'm 5' 11" and I started with mids and highway pegs on my fxdc, and I kept my feet on the highway pegs most of the time and found it to be a pain to move my feet back to the mids to use foot controls. I would cheat and use my heels for the controls, but I like having them where I position my feet. I switched to forwards and removed my mids and never looked back. When I get tired on long trips, I pull over and use the ground as my second foot position.
I bought my fat bob with the forwards. It first I didn't like the feeling on the highway as I felt like the wind was pulling at my legs and my feet felt like they were sliding off. Then I leaarned to relax and now love it.
I did buy a set of used mids and only installed the pegs. Works great for long trip as you have some other place to put your feet. I'm looking into stirups for the forward pegs as I was told they are almost like footboards for long distance comfort. Forward controls....you wont regret it.
Bought my 2001 with forward controls already on it. I added the Kury 3 inch forward extensions. I really like the feet and legs out in front. Mid controls aren't comfortable at all. 6'1" 260.
When I had my 1988 FXRS back in the early 90's it had the stock mid pegs. As I was used to a older (54) panhead, the mid pegs were not for me. I put a set of forward controls on and never looked back. It was the best money I ever spent. It's funny as I cleaned the garage a few weeks ago and found the take off mid pegs in a old box, along with some other take off parts, I changed out for chrome.
