Stock pipes with Slip On's more performance than New Exhaust Setups?
Stock 96ci with slip on's with Big Sucker A/C.
With all this info about back pressure, and how some new wide open exhausts lose back pressure, would factory pipes with slip on's be more performance orientated? With my current factory pipes, the drag pipe style, the factory pipes have a cross over pipe that, in a sense, should act like a 2n1 pipe somewhat. The two pipes are actually tied together and are not straight through individual pipes. I'm not sure of the actual size of the exhaust pipe itself. I emailed Cobra to ask about their "Dragsters" which are basically the same style as the pipes currently on my bike, except cleaner looking because of the one piece heat shields. But they said the Dragsters do not have a "power port like their Speedsters model". From what I can tell, that power port is the same as the cross over pipe on the factory exhaust. So how is it, with the need of back pressure on the Twin Cam engines, the factory pipes with slip on's is not a better choice for performance? Any guru's have info about this? I'm in the midst of exhaust shopping and want to make a good decision with the info I can gather. Thanks, |
Depends on which yr/model u refer to. My 2012 fat bob has a catalytic converter in the head pipe that restricts flow

A brother of mine put V&H slip ons on his road king and he loves them. But he got the last year before the cats went in the pipes. I went with after market exhaust for mine but its a 2011. If I had a 2007 I would probably run slip ons and be fine. You can always run slip ons for a year or two and then buy after market if you don't like them. If you are planning a big bore kit, cams etc after market exhaust is the way to go. If your just doing stage 1 (pipes , air cleaner , tuner) you will be fine with slip on mufflers.

I've had my slip on's for a year, but would hate to buy new pipes that didn't perform as well. I guess if I got a 2n1 pipe, it would perform better, but if I want to keep the 2n2 drag style pipe look, the stock pipes with slip on's might be the best as far as performance goes.
But I don't know for sure. |
Pretty simple actually. If you are going to cam it , or big bore it eventually you will want better pipes. If your only running it stock with air cleaner , slip ons and tuner you should be happy with what you have.

I went from the Rush 1 3/4 slip-ons to a full 2 into 1 and hell yea, there is a difference.

This is a 88" Wide Glide with a HiFlow A/C, drag pipes with W118 Thunder Torque Inserts installed. With your Big Sucker, stock headers and some slip ons with the TTI, you will get close to what you would have with a 2-1 system. But you would be spending $25 instead of $500-$1000. |
I liked my V&H slip on's but just changed to Freedom 2-1's. I also installed some S&S 583 easy start cams and I'm very happy with the gain in performance. Not sure how much the pipes added but they sure sound great at a light and when I'm cruising they are much quieter than the slip on's with the quiet baffles.

Slip-ons will never out-perform a full system exhaust looks or HP/TQ.
