Default Over tightening of Axel and Slider Cap Nuts

Hey guys,

My grandfather was replacing the front tire on is 2001 Harley FXDWG. He asked me to pose a question to the forums. What could happen from tightening the axel and slider cap nuts over the recommended torque amount.

The recommended torque amount for the axel nut is 50-55 ft-lb, and he tightened it to 80 ft-lb.

The recommended torque amount for the slider cap nuts is 60-132 in-lb, and he tightened them to 150 in-lb.

These numbers are out of the owners manual.

Any advice or help is appreciated. Thanks

Unless something was stripped or snapped I don't think you have a problem. I would just loosen them up and retorque to the right specs.

^^ yeah
Also if the axle nut is too tight it causes premature bearing wear.
Just losen and retorque.

Most axles have a taper on the nut side that gets pulled into a taper on the lower leg. Once those two tapers seat the axle is not going to get pulled any farther. So, putting 150ftlbs on the nut is not going to affect anything. That's just my common sense veiw of it.
